Karl-Rudolf Korte (born November 15, 1958 in Hagen ) is a German political scientist . Since 2002 he has been a professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen on the Duisburg campus and since 2006 director of the NRW School of Governance . He appears regularly in the media as a guest for election analysis .

Life and academic career

Karl-Rudolf Korte studied political science , German and pedagogy in Mainz and Tübingen . In 1983 he passed the state examination and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD at the University of Mainz. After completing his studies, Korte worked as a research assistant and head of several research projects at the University of Mainz until 1995. He then took part in setting up the Center for Applied Political Research at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1997 , Korte completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and was awarded the prize for the best habilitation thesis.

After substitute professorships at the Universities of Trier, Cologne, Munich and Duisburg, he has been Professor of Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen at the chair “Political System of the Federal Republic of Germany and Modern State Theories” since 2002.

He has been the director of the NRW School of Governance since 2006. From 2010 to 2017 he was also dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Korte was chairman of the German Society for Political Science from 2013 to 2015 . He is the managing editor of the magazine for political science and the editorial board of the magazine Politik & Kommunikation .

Election analysis and the public

Korte became publicly known through his political analyzes in daily newspapers, magazines and television. As an election expert, he mainly appears on the public broadcasters ZDF , WDR and Phoenix . One focus of his research is on the relationships between party strategies, media and voter behavior.

In November 2006, the magazine Unicum Beruf in cooperation with the auditing company KPMG named Korte professor of the year in the category humanities, social and cultural studies, who works as a "pioneer for careers" and the promotion of young talent. He offers his students a network that brings them into constant contact with companies, so the reasoning of the initiators.

In the refugee debate in 2015, he contradicted the view that Angela Merkel had “lost touch with the mood in the population” and described her stance as “humanitarian and straightforward”. The demand made by today's Prime Minister Markus Söder and other politicians for an upper limit for the influx of refugees is "purely symbolic politics " and "absurd".
