The NRW School of Governance is an institution of the Institute for Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen under the direction of Karl-Rudolf Korte . It was opened in a ceremony on November 8, 2006 by the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia , Jürgen Rüttgers . In May 2016 it celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The commitment of the NRW School of Governance aims at three central training areas:

  • Master's degree in "Political Management, Public Policy and Public Administration" (Master of Arts)
  • Doctoral College: Scholarship and Excellence Programs at the Institute for Political Science
  • Part-time "Master of Public Policy" (MPP) and advanced training modules

Professorships

There are two so-called “core professorships” at the NRW School of Governance. Christoph Bieber is the holder of the Welker Endowed Professorship for Ethics in Political Management and Society. It focuses on ethical questions in the political decision-making process as well as questions about responsibility, trust, credibility and transparency in politics, the public and society. The professor for Public Policy and State Politics is held by Andreas Blätte. The NRW School of Governance aims to promote a scientifically sound understanding of political processes in North Rhine-Westphalia through appropriate research and teaching.

Masters courses

The NRW School of Governance currently (as of 2020) offers two master's programs:

Master's degree in "Political Management, Public Policy and Public Administration" (Master of Arts)

Since the 2006/2007 winter semester, the NRW School of Governance has offered a master's degree in "Political Management, Public Policy and Public Administration" . Hundreds of students apply for the 30 Master’s positions every year. The master’s course lasts four semesters and is intended to prepare graduates for management positions in politics, associations, companies and administration. Excursions, business games and guest lecturers from politics, media, business and science complement the range of courses and are intended to convey the course content to the students as practically as possible. In the field of applied political research, the course imparts knowledge about organizational, communication and control techniques as well as core competencies for problem analysis and solution. The course is divided into nine modules:

  1. Modern governance and political management in a multilevel system
  2. Methods and research designs
  3. Public administration and public management
  4. Public, public opinion and strategic communication
  5. Policy field and policy analysis
  6. Practical policy management
  7. internship
  8. Policy management orientation knowledge
  9. Colloquium and master's thesis

"Master of Public Policy" (MPP)

The fee-based advanced training course "Master of Public Policy" is aimed at decision-makers as well as young professionals in administrations, political parties, associations, media, companies or other organizations with interfaces to politics. Since the content of the course is geared towards practical requirements, applicants must provide evidence of at least two years of professional experience. You can start your studies in both the summer and winter semesters. The study program is designed for four semesters parallel to work and concludes with the academic degree “Master of Public Policy”. One block week (Monday to Friday) and two two-day blocks (Friday and Saturday) are planned per semester, which usually take place on the premises of the NRW School in Duisburg.

PhD college

The doctoral college bundles the activities of the NRW School of Governance for the promotion of doctoral candidates. Various doctoral programs and scholarships are offered at the NRW School of Governance, which enable the sponsored not only financial resources but also special closed-door meetings of the doctoral college, method workshops, research trips and conference participation. This targeted communication of key qualifications is intended to support a quick and successful doctorate.

In the past, the sponsors also included Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH , the Haniel Foundation , the WAZ media group and the WestLB -Stiftung Zukunft NRW.

Qualification

The NRW School of Governance designs and organizes qualification programs for external target groups. The content-related modules of the master’s program are provided in seminars in the form of a training format for working groups, institutions and companies.

Components of the workshops are:

  1. The communication of research and teaching content in target-oriented formats, such as block, evening and weekend seminars as well as in-house training
  2. Practice-oriented workshops in which working people receive technical insights beyond their everyday work
  3. Increase in the professional competence of the participants and their implementation in the individual everyday work
  4. Sustainable quality assurance of the cooperation partners of the NRW School of Governance

The program also includes formats for pupils at secondary schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. Special practice-oriented qualification programs for youth and educational work are offered here.

Fellows of the NRW School of Governance

Since the 2007 summer semester, the NRW School of Governance has regularly appointed fellows from the fields of politics, economics, science and media in order to strengthen the practical relevance of the mentoring program. The practitioners should be available to the master’s and doctoral students during their studies as advice and ideas and to establish contacts in the respective work areas. The fellows of the NRW School of Governance are:

Visiting professorship

The "Guest Professorship for Political Management of the Mercator Foundation" is awarded once a year by the NRW School of Governance at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Most recently , Gregor Gysi , a member of the Bundestag and former party and parliamentary group leader of the Die Linke party , was awarded the visiting professorship for political management in the 2019/2020 winter semester . As experts in political practice, the visiting professors are available to the master’s students in seminars as part of the study program, but there are also public events for those interested at the University of Duisburg-Essen .
