With a focus on educational opportunities, the foundation supports children and young people with difficult starting conditions, particularly in Duisburg.

  • In the cooperation project "Education as an Opportunity" , the social enterprise opportunities work e. V., apeiros eV and Teach First Germany have merged. According to the motto “Together we can achieve more”, the companies interlink their work in order to break down educational barriers and pave the way for weaker students to a successful professional future. The project is now active at 23 schools in Duisburg.
  • In the Aletta Haniel program at the comprehensive school of the same name in Duisburg-Ruhrort, two specially hired specialists look after pupils at risk of graduation. Through intensive support from the eighth to the tenth grade, the young people are supported on their way to a good degree and connection to professional life.
  • The Talent Company supports the students of the Aletta Haniel Comprehensive School in finding a career and taking their first steps in the world of work.

With a focus on promoting young talent, the foundation promotes talented young managers - with a focus on sustainable ideas and creative approaches in the spirit of value-oriented entrepreneurs.

  • With the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes , the foundation has been awarding up to eight scholarships annually to outstanding university graduates for business-related postgraduate studies in other European or non-European countries since 1992 as part of the Haniel scholarship program . As a result, the German junior employees also qualify for tasks in international companies and organizations.
  • As part of the McCloy Academic Scholarship Program , the Haniel Foundation has financed one of six annual scholarships since 2002 for a master’s degree in public administration or public policy at one of the best universities in the world: the Harvard Kennedy School.
  • With the support of the Haniel Foundation, the University of St. Gallen and the Copenhagen Business School, as part of the European Haniel Program, encourage young managers to reflect on their actions and thus to grow beyond themselves. Key questions relate to what role cultural and social sciences can play in management and entrepreneurship training.
  • Entrepreneurial thinking and application-related analytical methods are not only in demand in the private sector. They are also used by decision-makers in not-for-profit organizations - and thus promote socio-political change. That is why the Haniel Foundation has supported the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy since it was founded by setting up named chairs and awarding scholarships. In 2008 the "Franz Haniel Chair of Public Policy" was established, in 2013 the "Aletta Haniel Chair of Public Policy and Entrepreneurship" and in 2016 the "Gerhard Haniel Chair for Public Policy and International Development".
  • Since 2009, the Haniel Foundation has been promoting the first German-Japanese double master’s program with the Haniel Japan Program . The aim is to train multilingual experts and young managers - as competent intermediaries between Europe and Asia.
  • The Haniel China Scholarship Program has been awarding four scholarships each year since 2012 to Chinese students who are aiming for management positions in international companies. The scholarship covers four years of study at the East Asia Institute of Ludwigshafen University.

Transparency and impact orientation

The foundation is a member of the Federal Association of German Foundations . Every year the foundation prepares annual financial statements based on the principles of the German Commercial Law for small corporations. The auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers audits the annual financial statements. Every five years it reviews its work and its strategic direction with external experts.
