Gert Scobel (born May 12, 1959 in Aachen ) is a German journalist , television presenter , author and philosopher .

Life

education

Gert Scobel studied philosophy and Catholic theology from 1977, initially at the Jesuit University St. Georgen in Frankfurt am Main , where he graduated in Catholic theology in 1983, as well as at the University of California, Berkeley , where he also received a Master of Arts made in 1981. Back in Frankfurt am Main, he deepened his knowledge of philosophy of science and philosophy of language at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University and taught for three months at the University of San Francisco .

Career

From 1985 Scobel worked as a freelancer for a magazine for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as well as for the Hessian and West German broadcasts . In 1988 he completed an internship at the Hessischer Rundfunk. From 1989 Scobel worked as a freelance culture journalist for radio, television and print media and was the author of TV documentaries and features, among others. a. about ethics in business and industry, brain research and artificial intelligence .

Since 1995, from the beginning, Scobel was one of the presenters of the daily 3sat broadcast Kulturzeit , from which he left in December 2007. In 1997 he completed an EICOS science grant at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Martinsried near Munich. In 1998 he co-founded the 3sat science magazine "nano". From 1999 to 2000 he moderated the literary magazine "Leselust" on WDR television.

In addition, he moderated the ARD morning magazine from 2001 to 2003 as anchorman , from 2002 to 2003 as moderator of the literary magazine "Bücher Bücher" on HR television and from 2004 to January 2008 every second Thursday evening on 3sat's show delta , which he also directed and responsible for the concept. From 2003 to 2014 he took over the moderation of the program Sundays - TV for Life on ZDF in alternation from 2008 to 2014 .

In 2007 he designed and hosted the philosophy and culture program “next stop” on Kika . Since April 2008, he has been the editor-in-chief and presenter at 3sat, presenting the weekly program called scobel . He has been the presenter of this program since 2015.

In 2006 he completed a second EICOS research grant at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen and at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot , Israel.

From 2006 to 2013 he carried out a doctoral project under Ingolf Dalferth at the Institute for Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Religion at the University of Zurich on the subject of pluralism - reflections on a theory of complex systems , which he did not complete. In addition, Scobel deals with the topics of wisdom and meditation at the intersection of theology and science as well as with ethical and political aspects of digitization .

In 2013 he took over the program management of the Phil.Cologne (International Festival of Philosophy in Cologne) and was Chair of the Interdisciplinary Campus.

Tasks in the sciences

Scobel held several guest lectureships, including at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University of Witten / Herdecke . Since 2016 he has been an honorary professor for philosophy and interdisciplinarity at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences . Since 2018 Scobel has been a member of the board of directors of the "Center for Ethics and Responsibility" as a scientific institution at the Bonn-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. Also in 2018 he took on a visiting professorship for political management from the Mercator Foundation at the NRW School of Governance .

Memberships

He has been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2016 .

Private life

Until 2008, Scobel lived with Susanne Fröhlich , whom he had met during his traineeship at Hessischer Rundfunk. They lived near Frankfurt am Main and have two children together.
