Jörg Schönenborn (born September 5, 1964 in Solingen ) is a German journalist , television presenter and television director of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).

Life

The son of a toolmaker and a wholesale and foreign trade clerk Joerg Schoenborn grew up with his younger brother in Solingen, put there at Humboldt High School his High School and graduated from 1983 to 1988 in the areas of journalism and political science graduated from the then University of Dortmund . There he also met his future wife Jona Teichmann, whom he married in 1990 and who is currently in charge of the regional program group in the WDR radio division . The couple live in Hilden .

Professional career

After his traineeship at WDR, Schönenborn worked as a freelance journalist for radio and television from 1986 to 1990 and was then radio editor at the WDR studio in Wuppertal for two years . From 1992 to 1997 he worked as an ARD news correspondent in North Rhine-Westphalia. Schönenborn also worked as an editor in the WDR television editorial group Zeitgeschehen Aktuell during this time , of which he took over in 1997.

In 1999 he replaced Ulrich Deppendorf as the election moderator for ARD and in January 2002 became editor-in-chief of WDR television. He also moderates the press club and can be seen on the occasional special broadcasts produced by WDR, for example on ARD-Brennpunkt . He also presents figures and projections during elections. On November 22, 2013 Schönenborn was elected by the WDR Broadcasting Council as the new television director and took up his new post on May 1, 2014.

He has been a member of the University Council of the German Sport University Cologne since 2017 .

Controversy

  • In December 2012, he described the radio broadcast on public television as a “ democracy tax” and thus triggered a fierce debate nationwide.
  • In April 2013, Schönenborn conducted a television interview with Vladimir Putin . There was criticism that Schönenborn had lost the lead in the conversation and was not adequately prepared.
  • In August 2015, the WDR program Hart but fair : Down with the Ampelmännchen was deleted from the media library after complaints from lobby groups . Schönenborn defended this, but after protests took the decision back as "incorrect".
