A program director is the head of the entire editorial department of a public service broadcaster or a commercial radio or television broadcaster.

With the emergence and development of broadcasting in Germany, structures emerged that by and large are still there today. While in the print media sector, i.e. the press, the editor-in- chief is in charge of the entire editorial area, in the case of radio it is the program director, often called radio director or television director according to his respective tasks. The editors-in-chief can be subordinate to these directors or have the same status. Other mixed forms have emerged depending on the size and task of the broadcasting stations in Germany.

In commercial broadcasting, the program director is even more important, as he has a decisive influence on the economic success of the station. In so-called private television , the most important program directors were or are often managing directors of the station such as Helmut Thoma or Anke Schäferkordt on RTL or Fred Kogel on SAT.1.

Colleges

In the higher education sector, a program director is responsible for one or more study programs and leads them in a similar way to a product manager in a company. While in Anglo-Saxon countries this function can be found at many universities, in Germany there are program directors mainly at private universities, especially business schools . For example, the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management , WHU and Zeppelin University have program directors.
