The Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance is a nationally recognized and the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Wuerttemberg accredited private-sector foundation university .
Legal form and self-image
The university has the legal form of a non-profit company with limited liability and calls itself "University between economy, culture and politics" in order to emphasize the multidisciplinary character of research and teaching according to its own self-image . The partner is the ZU Foundation based in Friedrichshafen, the foundation is provided by Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH , Garching near Munich. The namesake is the German general and airship designer Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin . Zeppelin University has been a foundation university since 2007 .
history
In 2003 the university was renamed from the “International School for General Management” under Dieter Giehmann to “Zeppelin University”. Shortly afterwards, the economist Stephan A. Jansen took over the office of president and management at the same time. This converted the former business school into a multidisciplinary university, whose offerings now extended to the fields of economics , culture and communication as well as political and social sciences . The newly founded “Zeppelin University”, which started with 19 students, pursued the goal of reforming the German university landscape through “innovative concepts in teaching and research”.
In February 2009 the Science Council accredited ZU. On September 10, 2011, she was awarded the doctorate and habilitation rights. This status was extended for another 5 years in 2018 by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg . This also includes the authorization to use the name “University”.
In the summer of 2014, disagreements between the board of trustees and management came to light. The Chancellor, who was only hired in December 2012, Niels Helle-Meyer, was dismissed without notice by the board of trustees, the board of trustees, at the beginning of August 2014. The reasons given were different views on the future of the university. The fact that the termination took place without notice was justified by the fact that Helle-Meyers went public.
A commission system became known through a press report on September 10, 2014. University employees had to raise funds such as B. for endowed professorships, receive prizes that have allegedly not been agreed with the donors. University President Jansen in particular benefited from this. He resigned prematurely on September 8, 2014, just a few months before his originally planned departure. He cited personal reasons as the cause - Jansen had already announced some time ago that he would be leaving the university in spring 2015 after eleven years of presidency at the latest to accept a position as visiting professor at Stanford University . After Jansen's resignation, he and Zeppelin University faced a series of allegations. In October 2014, the Ravensburg public prosecutor launched an investigation against Jansen on suspicion of fraud and corruption. After more than four years, the investigation was discontinued in May 2019 in return for a monetary requirement. From September 2014 Alfred Kieser and Alexander Kübler-Kreß took over the management of the university.
In April 2015 Insa Sjurts took over the office of President. On September 16, 2016, the former publishing director of Spiegel publishing house Matthias Schmolz was appointed as the new chancellor.
On March 3, 2020, Klaus Mühlhahn was elected President and Managing Director by the Senate of Zeppelin University (ZU) in Friedrichshafen and appointed to office by the ZU Foundation, the supporting foundation of ZU. He will take up his five-year term on June 1, 2020. Mühlhahn succeeds Insa Sjurts, who accepted an offer as president at the Hamburg School of Business Administration .
Locations
The university has two permanent locations in Friedrichshafen. The former main location of ZU (SeeCampus SMH) is in Friedrichshafen directly on Lake Constance . Since the university has grown strongly since its foundation, construction of another, larger main campus (ZF Campus) began in 2013, which was completed in the 2015 fall semester , financed by a donation from ZF Friedrichshafen amounting to 20 million euros. This supplements the SeeCampus on the Seemoser Horn with a larger library, an auditorium, further office and seminar rooms, a cafeteria, a work room, a fitness studio and a part of the building with various coworking spaces that can be freely used by students .
From 2007 to 2008 (until the airport was closed) the university had another location in Berlin in the foyer of Tempelhof airport , the "Institute for the Art of Aerial Swimming".
In 2017, as-if architects for the Zeppelin University campus were awarded second prize in the competition for the German galvanizing award. In 2018 the campus was awarded the DAM Prize for Architecture by the German Architecture Museum as one of four outstanding new buildings in Germany. In addition, the university received for the main campus of the German university construction price in 2018 of the German University Foundation .

At the beginning of the autumn semester 2011, the university switched all bachelor's courses to a standard study period of eight semesters. This also went hand in hand with an increase in the ECTS total from 180 to 240 credits, which meant that a bachelor's degree from ZU only had to complete a two-semester master's degree (60 ECTS) in order to be eligible for doctoral studies at most German universities. The additional year should be used as the “Humboldt Year” primarily for a research stay at one of the partner universities. In order to enable seamless stays abroad, the study times at Zeppelin University are based on the international semester schedules. You can start your studies twice a year in January and September.
Partner universities
The university cooperates with 91 partner universities worldwide, including:
- University of California, Berkeley
- Sciences Po
- Copenhagen Business School
- Goldsmiths College
- Maastricht University
Selection process
The applicants are selected in a two-stage selection process : After the written application, a pre-selection takes place. Afterwards there is an invitation to a selection day , on which interviews with professors, students, alumni and external parties take place and written tests have to be passed. In addition, a project is carried out in which a problem has to be worked on in a group and then presented to the selection committee.
The selection procedure at ZU is considered demanding and selective, also because it differs considerably from the procedures usual at other universities. The university is moving away from pure numerus clausus and instead tries to find personalities who, in addition to the required objective performance, also fit the character of the university. Value is placed on extracurricular activities such as voluntary commitment or practical experience.
Interdisciplinarity
A specialty is the interdisciplinary nature of the courses. In the first two semesters, all students go through compulsory courses from all degree programs and thus also get to know the content of the other subjects as well as the basics of law . In addition, particularly high-performing students (up to a grade point average of 2.0) have the option of choosing a certain number of elective courses from the other courses of study or of taking one of them as an additional minor subject to their own Certificate of completion is handed out.
Student research
At the ZU, students are introduced to scientific research at an early stage : a joint research project (“Zeppelin Project”) must be carried out in the first year of the Bachelor’s degree. In the sixth and seventh semester there is also the possibility of carrying out a student research project financed by the university in the so-called "Humboldt Year". In the Master’s program, too, students get space for their own research projects. A conference on student research takes place every year. The research support system (FUSY) enables promising research activities by young scientists to be financially supported.
"Service-oriented teaching"
At the university there are usually no lectures, but rather seminar groups of up to 40 people in which original literature is worked on. Students can initiate their own course formats on topics of their own choosing, which can be taken as extracurricular courses (“supplements”) or counted towards the curriculum (“Student Studies”). The supervisory ratio is 1:12.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
The tuition fees in the master’s program range between 4,380 euros and 7,612 euros per semester. For bachelor programs, the sum varies between 4,140 and 4,740 euros when paid semesterly. In total, the tuition fees for a bachelor's degree are 33,120 euros and 37,920 euros.
In this way, the university tries to enable those applicants to study at ZU who, due to difficult personal backgrounds or gaps in their curriculum vitae, would have difficulties getting a place at other universities, as well as to help financially disadvantaged students in order to help each applicant as possible to offer equal opportunities. Therefore, the university offers various scholarships, including for social engagement and a diversity scholarship.
Students without a scholarship can either use their studies with a student loan from the Sparkasse Herford, or apply for admission to the "ZU education fund", which pre-finances the studies through a reverse generation contract .
In addition, around 15% of the ZU students are scholarship holders from a gifted support organization .
Incubator
Since 2003, over 120 start-ups have been carried out at the university. Since autumn 2017 the new “start-up center” has existed with the “PioneerPort” on the Seemooser Horn campus. The “PioneerSchool” and “Tatendrang” initiatives also pave the way for founding a company. In addition to Zeppelin University itself, J. Wagner GmbH also has an incubator in the start-up center as a partner.
The student start- ups include DeinBus.de , Stilnest, agora42 , Impact HUB Munich , Reparando and Unu Motors .
In 2016, Zeppelin University received an award for German science from the Founding Radar Stifterverband .
Student engagement
There are around 59 student initiatives. These include the educational initiative " Rock Your Life ", the campus radio "Welle20", the university newspaper "ZU | Daily", the student magazine "futurdrei" , the debating club "Soapbox", the "Club of International Politics" with its own MUN group, the founders' conference “Tatendrang”, the cultural festival “seekult”, the “Entrepreneurs Club”, the career fair “ZUtaten”, the student management consultancy “whyknot”, the International Student Group and several political university groups. With the “Student Project Office” there is also a separate department to support student initiatives. In addition, university sports offer a wide range of sports.
Since 2009, the university has appointed a full-time student to the “Student Vice-Presidency” of the university's executive committee.
Research institutes
The university has several integrated, interdisciplinary research institutes, some of which are financed by third parties. These include the “Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin” funded by the Karl Schlecht Foundation , the “Friedrichshafen Institute for Family Businesses”, the “Research Center for Consumers, Market and Politics” and the “European Center for Sustainability Research” funded by Audi and Rolls-Royce Power Systems ".
Rankings
In the CHE ranking 2020/21 of the Center for Higher Education Development, the bachelor's and master's degrees in economics (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Management & Economics (CME), Master of Science in Corporate Management & Economics (CME) and Master of Arts in General Management (GEMA)), together with the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, ranks top of all German universities.
In the CHE Ranking 2018 of the Center for Higher Education Development, the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Politics, Administration & International Relations are among the best in Germany. In the 2017 CHE ranking, ZU was ranked among the top 3 of all German universities for bachelor's and master's degrees in economics. In the 2014/15 CHE ranking of the Center for Higher Education Development, the bachelor's programs in economics, cultural and communication sciences, as well as political and administrative sciences were placed in the top group among German universities. The degree program Sociology, Politics and Economics is not ranked there due to the special combination of subjects.
