Alfred Kieser

Alfred Kieser (born March 26, 1942 in Würzburg ) is a German organizational theorist and economist .

The son of a factory owner graduated from high school in Buchen im Odenwald in 1961 and then studied economics at the University of Würzburg and the University of Cologne . He completed his studies in Cologne in 1966 with a degree in business administration and then went from 1967 to 1968 as a special student at Carnegie Mellon University ( Pittsburgh , USA). In 1969 he received his doctorate in Cologne. rer. pole. business growth and product innovation with work . In 1973 the habilitation followed there . From 1974 to 1977 he was professor of organization and human resources management at the Free University of Berlin . From 1978 until his retirement in 2010, Kieser taught as professor for general business administration and organization at the University of Mannheim .

Since his retirement, Kieser initially taught as a visiting professor, then from December 2011 as holder of the chair for management theory until 2015 at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, and from 2011 to 2015 he held the position of Vice President for Research at the Zeppelin University. From September 2014 to March 2015 he was also acting president of the university. Since August 2016 he has been a visiting professor for organizational theory at the Reinhard Mohn Institute for Management at the University of Witten / Herdecke .

He has been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 1998 and in the same year he also received an honorary doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 2011 he received his second honorary doctorate from Corvinus University Budapest . Kieser has been married for a second time since 1972 and has two children.

The economist is one of the leading German researchers on organizational theory and the author of numerous scientific publications that are important for sociology beyond business management aspects . His book Organization , which he wrote together with Peter Walgenbach , is regarded as the standard work of organizational theory . He is critical of advice based on business management approaches; in his opinion, organizational theory is particularly unsuitable for practical business advice. Kieser was also extremely critical of the economization of science. In his farewell lecture at the University of Mannheim, he addressed this problem in relation to the scientific system, which is increasingly oriented towards rankings , under the catchphrase of the ton ideology of research . In August 2012, Kieser, together with Margit Osterloh, launched an appeal to other business administration professors to boycott the Handelsblatt business economist ranking , which was being published at the time . After the Handelsblatt reported on this appeal by Kieser and Osterloh in a blog post , both professors commented on the journalist's portrayal in a newly created internet blog .
