Karl Oettle's teaching and research work focused on three areas:

  • business administration in public and non-profit organizations (non-profit organizations)
  • the transport industry and transport policy issues
  • general business administration, in particular basic questions of the subject.

In addition, he took a well-founded position on political, economic and geographical (especially spatial) and health-economic issues.

Oettle's approach is analytical and differentiating. His study of public-economic goals is fundamental. He pointed out the dubious effects of transport policy very early on and placed public transport at the center. Oettle was skeptical of the undifferentiated application of market-based instruments.
