history

Main building of the Corvinus University on the banks of the Danube

Economics teaching institutions in Budapest date back to 1763. The history of the Corvinus University Budapest refers to the economic faculty of the then Royal Hungarian University, founded in 1920 . In 1953 it was renamed the Karl Marx University of Economics , in 1991 the University of Economics (Hungarian: Közgazdasági Egyetem , colloquially abbreviated: Közgáz , a name by which most Hungarians still know the university today), then University of Economics and State Administration and since 2003 it has been named after Matthias Corvinus .

Faculties

Style and location

Facade of the main building at night

The main building is located in the so-called small inner city ring directly on the bank of the Danube, opposite the Műszaki Egyetem , the Technical University of Budapest and within sight of the Statue of Liberty on Gellért Mountain and the Gellért Bath (Hungarian: Gellért Fürdő or Gellért Gyógyfürdő , the latter being the Gellért Health Bath means). At the rear of the main building, only separated by a small side street, is the Great Market Hall . Another building of the university, in which the computer rooms are located, is about 50 meters southeast. In the same direction, another 100 meters, but separated from the Danube bank around 150 meters, is the modern-style new building built around 2006. The main building, on the other hand, is a massive building in a more classical style. The impressive ceiling height of the ground floor (especially in the entrance area) and the glazed atrium, which is also used for official events, are noteworthy. In addition to the ones mentioned, the university has other buildings in the immediate vicinity, where language classes in particular take place.

Everyday student life

The winter semester at the university starts for Hungarian students at the beginning of September. Some of the lectures run until Christmas and the exams are mostly in the New Year. The summer semester follows after a short break, but ends in June. ERASMUS students of the winter semester will usually start with the introductory events at the end of August (if they have not already completed a language course beforehand), but can end the semester before Christmas. This means that the semester distribution is closer to the Anglo-American systems than the German.
