statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty ( Hungarian Szabadság-szobor ) in Budapest , the capital of Hungary , stands on Gellért Hill in front of the citadel in the Buda district . It is the largest of a group of three bronze statues by the sculptor Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl , which were erected in 1947 in honor of the soldiers who liberated the country in World War II . It is set up so that it can be seen from almost anywhere in Budapest. A woman is shown holding a palm frond in the sky above her. The 14 meter high statue, together with its base, is around 40 meters high. A Hungarian nurse was the model.

According to a legend, she originally held a propeller in her hands and was meant to remind of Miklós Horthy's son, who had a fatal accident as a test pilot at the beginning of the Second World War . The propeller was after the invasion of the Red Army but then replaced in February 1945 by the palm branch, because you did not want to continue to remind us of Miklós Horthy, who the Hitler regime was close to. In fact, the Russian version of the statue is a different design by the same sculptor.

Another statue shows a very powerful dragon slayer who fights the dragon with his bare fist; the third statue brings the flame of freedom.

At the base of the Statue of Liberty there was originally a sculpture of a Soviet soldier. It was removed during the time of the fall. Today it is in Szoborpark

Every year on August 20, the flares are ignited from the square in front of the Statue of Liberty for the national holiday.

The statue of liberty is the image on the 10 forint coin of the series valid until 1990.
