The Technical and Economic University of Budapest ( Hungarian : Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem , BME for short , now also often in English TUB ) is the most important technical university in Hungary .
history
The university was founded in 1782 by Emperor Joseph II as the Institutum Geometrico-Hydrotechnicum in Budapest . In 1871 it was renamed the Royal Hungarian Joseph University for Technology and Economics and thus recognized as a university . In 1934 there was another restructuring and renaming to Palatin-Josef University for Technology and Economics, which played a decisive role in the industrialization of Hungary in the 20s and 30s.
In 1955 the university was renamed the Technical University of Budapest . After the failed Hungarian popular uprising , it was expanded to a total of 6 faculties in 1956. In 2000 the name was finally changed to its current name.
