Zsolt Rostoványi

Zsolt Rostoványi (* 1952 in Pécel ) is a Hungarian economist, orientalist and Islam expert. He was rector of the Corvinus University Budapest from 2012 to 2016.

Live and act

Zolt Rostoványi was born the son of a civil servant lawyer. While attending the Eötvös József grammar school, he already attended German language courses and events on international relations. After obtaining his university entrance qualification, he studied economics, in particular foreign trade, at what was then the Karl Marx University in Budapest. In 1975 he obtained his master’s degree and moved within the university to the department of world trade, where he received his PhD in 1976. in economics. This was followed by research on the relationship with Germany and the Middle East, including a several month engagement at the University of Cairo . After his habilitation in 1985, he became a lecturer at the university.

In 1990 he was entrusted by Foreign Minister Géza Jeszenszky with the management of the ministerial department for international relations. At the same time he was director of the Budapest Institute for International and Diplomatic Studies (BIGIS) until 1992.

In 1992, Rostoványi was appointed professor at Corvinus University and elected dean for economics (1992–1998 and 2004–2011)

Memberships and engagements

  • Since 2006 he has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
  • In 2009 he was appointed President of the Graduate School for International Relations
  • In 2011 he was elected Rector of Corvinus University for the period until 2016.

Research and publications

The focus of his academic work is on the globalization of world trade and the relationship between the Arab-Islamic and Western world.

He is a much sought-after speaker at international specialist congresses; Together with his colleagues, he has written more than 250 publications in the past few years and is involved in the publication of more than 50 specialist books. In addition to his native Hungarian, he is also proficient in German, English, Russian and Arabic.
