Coworking (also Coworking , English "work together" for or koarbeiten or collaboratively ) is a development in the "new forms". Freelancers , smaller startups or digital nomads usually work in larger, relatively open spaces and can thus benefit from each other. You either work independently of one another in different companies and projects or develop projects together with other coworkers.

“Coworking Space” is an Anglicism for business concepts that make workplaces and infrastructure (network, printer, scanner, fax, telephone, projector, meeting rooms) available for a limited period of time. The difference to the office community is the mixture of different professions and the lower level of commitment.

development

As of February 2013, most of the coworking offices were in the United States (California) with around 800. Such places are also emerging in numerous European metropolises. In Germany in February 2013 there were around 230 coworking opportunities, worldwide the number was almost 2500. There are also initiatives, so-called “Jellies”, for which people meet weekly or at certain time intervals to work together.

The majority of coworking rooms offer a daily, weekly or monthly flat rate. Usually there are several fixed and flexible workplaces with the appropriate infrastructure ( internet connection , postal address and telephone). Visitors look for a new table for each of the flexible seats. The rental costs usually include the use (fair use) of WiFi, printer, kitchen, toilet and sometimes a conference or common room.

For coworking, which is also becoming increasingly popular in Europe, the founding and startup metropolis Berlin was a driving force behind the development. Numerous different offers have emerged in the urban area, such as the betahaus and the Rainmaking Loft in Kreuzberg , Factory Berlin , House of Clouds , Impact Hub , co.up , raumstation, KAOS and United Urbanites . The different shared offices are sometimes very different from one another. With some, the focus is on joint project work, with others on special equipment features (film studio, sewing studio, day nursery, etc.) or on a network with companies and institutes in close proximity. Heavily frequented coworking offers in other large cities are e.g. For example : Kulturhafen Riverboat and Wallpaper Factory in Leipzig, Hafven in Hanover, Metalab in Vienna and the utopia city in Wuppertal-Mirke station .

Coworking offers have also emerged in smaller towns, especially in university towns, B. Cowork in Greifswald , Fleet 7 in Kiel or Tisch in Schwerin .

In some small and medium-sized towns as well as rural areas, coworking spaces are occasionally created to network founders and artists in a region and to offer them favorable working conditions.

A special form of coworking space are workshop rooms and the so-called " FabLabs ". For craftsmen and artists in particular, various devices up to cutting-edge technology for experiments and business ideas are offered, such as large 3D printers or various lasers .

Economic consideration

In addition to the community aspect, another advantage for users is the lower costs, for example compared to a single office. In addition, coworking spaces allow flexible use in terms of space and time. Companies can use the coworking space at peak times or for large projects that require a large number of freelancers and external employees without having to reserve sufficient space themselves. From an entrepreneurship perspective, the composition of the users can create a breeding ground for new ideas that can be used by companies for open innovation . For example, individual employees can be sent to a coworking space. In the USA, start-up incubators are often attached to coworking spaces .

The coworkers themselves also benefit directly from the new workspaces. In a worldwide study, a large majority reported improved interactions with other people, and they also felt more productive and motivated. Around 40% have earned a higher income since working in a coworking space. In 2011, the US company WeWork came under fire for cosmetic accounting and has so far not been able to go public. In 2014, Forbes reported that WeWork was the fastest growing office tenant in New York .
