Metalab , founded in 2006, is a hackerspace in Vienna , a jointly operated open space for those interested in science, technology and digital art . The premises are located at Rathausstrasse 6 near the Vienna City Hall . As an association for the promotion of research and education in social and technical innovations - metalab , the Metalab offers a platform for a number of groups and organizations and provides a usable area of ​​220 m². The sponsoring association is financed from membership fees of around 200 members, sponsoring, drinks sales and (formerly) public grants from the City of Vienna and the Federal Ministry for Health, Family and Youth .

A hardware workshop, an electronics laboratory and space for collaborative collaboration are available to members and guests. The Metalab was the home of the first European YCombinator-inspired startup accelerator, YEurope, and the starting point for several Austrian start-ups such as Tumblelog , Soup.io and the online food order service Mjam . In addition, events and meetings of interest groups take place almost daily. The Metalab was also the venue for several hundred lectures related to the subject area of ​​the Hackerspace (including prominent figures such as Emmanuel Goldstein , Johannes Grenzfurthner , Jason Scott).

The international archive Hackerspaces.org was started by Metalab founders. The Metalab is often cited as the inspiration and starting point for the international hackerspace movement.
