Eric Corley

Eric Gordon Corley (born December 16, 1959 in Suffolk County , New York ) is an American hacker . He has given himself the pseudonym Emmanuel Goldstein after the leader of the underground in George Orwell's classic 1984 . He and his company 2600 Enterprises have published 2600: The Hacker Quarterly magazine since 1984 .

Life

In the late 1970s Corley attended a college at Stony Brook University in New York State. During this time he researched remote access to remote computer systems and came under investigation by the FBI , which was conducting a house search.

Eric Corley currently lives on Long Island near New York.

2600 Enterprises

In 1984 Corley founded the non-commercial company 2600 Enterprises, Inc., with which he publishes 2600 magazine . The company and the magazine are named after the 2600 Hz signal frequency that was used to control telephone networks in the 1960s. (see also Blue Box (phreaking) )

Since 1994, 2600 Enterprises has sponsored and organized the HOPE conference , an event with lectures on hacking topics, which takes place every 2 years in New York.

2600 Enterprises also organizes hacker clubs, e.g. B. 2,600 international meetings that take place every Friday in different cities.

DeCSS

After Corley published the DeCSS source code in a magazine article and on the website of the 2600 in 1999, he was sued by the film industry under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and was involved in another lawsuit ( Universal City Studios, Inc. vs. Corley , Universal City Studios, Inc. vs. Reimerdes ). DeCSS is a program that Linux allows users, organized DVDs to watch on their computers. Both procedures were decided for the film industry.

In the controversial verdict against Corley, US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan describes the 2600 magazine as follows:

" 2600: The Hacker Quarterly publishes articles on topics such as stealing Internet domain names, writing secure ASP source code, getting access to other people's e-mails, securing your Linux box, listening to cell phone calls, installing Linux on your Xbox , removing spyware and in the computer systems of the Costco stores and Federal Express collapse. One issue contains instructions from the Federal Criminal Court system for readers charged with hacking computers. Movie

In 2001 Corley published the documentary Freedom Downtime , which he wrote, produced and directed. It is about the convicted hacker Kevin Mitnick and the "Free Kevin" movement ( Freed Kevin ).

Expert

In 1993 Corley testified as an expert witness before the US Congress .

In 1995 he was a content advisor for the film Hackers - On the FBI's network . The creators gave one of the characters the name Emmanuel Goldstein.

Republican Party Congress

He was arrested on August 31, 2004 in New York City while attempting to film a demonstration against the Republican Convention . After being held for more than 30 hours, he was charged with gross mischief. At the hearing on November 29, 2004, the city dropped the charges against him.

During his student days Corley worked as a presenter on a campus radio.

In 1988, he founded the radio show Off the Hook , a one-hour roundtable format that has been aired weekly on the non-commercial radio station WBAI since then . Topics are hacking, hacker culture, computer security and civil rights.

He is also the presenter of Off the Wall on the radio station WUSB (a follow-up to his program Brain Damage ).

As part of his journalistic activities, he visited Cuba , North Korea and Belarus .
