Costco offers around 3300 products and 500 special items in 698 stores in the USA, Australia, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Iceland, Spain, France and Taiwan. The aim is to achieve a large turnover of goods at prices below those of other providers. In the USA, sales with the own brand Kirkland account for around 26% of group sales.
Costco acts as a club to which customers pay membership fees annually. In the USA, these amount to 60 to 140 US dollars per year and in France, for example, 36 euros net (plus VAT).
The average shopping basket value in France is € 130 on weekdays and € 160 on weekends.

Company history
The company was founded on September 15, 1983 with the opening of the first Seattle pick-up store by James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman .
In 1993 Costco merged with competitor Sol Price .
Trivia
The American comedy The Watch - Neighbors of the 3rd Kind with Ben Stiller (as Costco branch manager) is partly set in a Costco branch.
