Company history

William Pigott Sr. founded the company in 1905 as the Seattle Car Manufacturing Company in Bellevue, initially manufacturing railroad and logging equipment. After the merger with Twohy Brothers from Portland , Oregon , the company was changed to Pacific Car and Foundry Company .

The company made horse- or ox-drawn wooden vehicles that were particularly suitable for the lumber industry in the dense, hilly forests of the northwestern United States. In the years that followed, the company specialized in air brakes, open cars, refrigerated trucks for the shipping of perishable products and trailers or semi-trailers that could be pulled by a tractor unit. The company also made structural steel for use in columns and beams. In 1924 the founder, William Pigott, sold a controlling stake in the American Car and Foundry Company. But his son Paul Pigott bought these shares back in 1934.

During the Great Depression in 1930, after the stock market crash in 1929, the company's profits rose at first, but Pacific Car and Foundry Company was hit hard as it progressed. In the late 1930s, the company received government contracts for the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge, as well as contracts from other companies.

In World War II

During World War II , Pacific Car and Foundry Company participated in the great demand for steel for planes, airports, bridges, warships, highways and other that helped support American infrastructure for participation in World War II. The company built the aluminum wings for the B-17 bombers for Boeing . In 1942 the Ford Motor Company built the M4 tank for the US Army. The company was able to manufacture almost all parts for the tanks in its own foundry. Other military vehicles that were built were the M25 armored transporters and the T28 . Another important war company, Everett Pacific Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, was bought by Pacific Car and Foundry in 1944 after it was founded in 1942. It built ships for the US Navy at Port Gardner Bay in Everett .

After the Second World War

After the end of World War II, Pacific Car and Foundry Company was a general contractor producing tanks during the Korean conflict . In 1945 the company bought the "Kenworth Motor Truck Corporation". Kenworth has been manufacturing trucks in Seattle since 1923. During the Second World War, production shifted to military trucks and aircraft assemblies for the US Army. After the war, the focus was shifted to civil utility vehicles and buses.

In 1954, Pacific Car and Foundry Company acquired Peterbilt Motors Company , of Oakland, California. and in 1958 the Dart Truck Company in Kansas City, Missouri. This company primarily built heavy trucks and special vehicles. Peterbilt was a major competitor to Kenworth, who produced many types of trucks and buses. The Steel Division supplied the steel for building the Seattle-First National Bank headquarters and the Space Needle in Seattle in 1961. The company made a total of 5,668 steel plates that were used for the World Trade Center in New York City.

1970 to 1990

1972 the company name was officially changed to Paccar Inc., the name "Pacific Car and Foundry Company" continued to designate a division. Despite the 1974 recession, Paccar managed to increase sales over the course of the 1970s. In 1973, Paccar bought the Wagner Mining Company, which manufactured mining vehicles. In 1975 "International Car Company" and in 1980 " Foden Trucks ", a British truck manufacturer, were bought. Foden sold trucks in Europe and Africa. The Paccar Technical Center was established in 1980 in Mount Vernon, Washington, as a research and test facility. The facility has test tracks, engine test cells, materials testing laboratories and structural laboratories.

In the mid-1980s, Paccar's share of heavy trucks in the United States fell to around 18% due to aggressive competition from competitor Freightliner Trucks, a subsidiary of Daimler AG. Because of this situation, Paccar was forced to close its assembly plant in Kenworth, Kansas City, and its plant in Peterbilt, Newark, California , in 1986 . Paccar acquired Trico Industries, an oil exploration equipment maker based in Gardena, California, in 1986 to reduce its reliance on the heavy truck market. Paccar was interested in British Leyland's truck division, which was owned by the Rover Group. However, the Rover management decided to sell to DAF Trucks . The Dart Truck Company and Wagner Mining Equipment Company were sold in 1984 and 1989 in order to remain profitable.
