NASDAQ
The Nasdaq [ ˈnæsdæk ], based in New York, is the largest electronic exchange in the USA, measured by the number of listed companies. The name is an acronym for N ational A ssociation of S ecurities D ealers A utomated Q uotations . The exchange was founded in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) as a fully electronic trading platform . It is often referred to as the “technology exchange”, as it has historically lower requirements and costs than the competing oneNew York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was favored by smaller (and riskier) tech firms.
Since February 2008, the stock of which is Nasdaq, Inc. operated. The supervisory authority is the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Group structure
The Nasdaq is made up of the Nasdaq National Market and the Nasdaq SmallCap Market. The main exchange is based in the United States, with exchanges in Canada and Japan . There are links to the stock exchanges in Hong Kong and Europe. The New York office is located in the northwest corner of the Condé Nast Building in Times Square in Manhattan .
history
When trading began on February 8, 1971, it was the first electronic exchange . In 1998 it merged with the American Stock Exchange ; since 1999 it has been the largest American stock exchange, on which half of the US public companies are listed. The Nasdaq was temporarily closed because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
In 2002, Nasdaq introduced Supermontage , SUMO for short , as an electronic system. In the largest civil case in US history, a federal court sentenced dozens of brokerage houses (including Merrill Lynch , Goldman Sachs , and Salomon Smith Barney ) to pay $ 1.03 billion to aggrieved investors who started a large-scale price-fixing plan were cheated.
On May 25, 2007, it was announced that Nasdaq will merge with the Swedish stock exchange OMX . The NASDAQ offered 2.73 billion euros for the exchange operator OMX. After the merger, which was completed on February 27, 2008, the company is called Nasdaq OMX Group and has a market capitalization of approximately $ 7.1 billion. The takeover of the London Stock Exchange (LSE), however, failed in 2006 due to resistance from the management of the London Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq allows several market participants to participate in trading via the Electronic Communication Network (ECN). The Small Order Execution System ( SOES ) is another NASDAQ feature that was introduced in 1984 to ensure the execution of all orders even with higher trading volumes. On the OTC Bulletin Board of NASDAQ shares are traded under the symbol NDAQ.
Nasdaq trading hours are 9:30 am to 4:00 pm New York time ( EST ), which is usually 3:30 pm to 10:00 pm German time ( CET ). There are deviations in spring and autumn because the annual changeover between normal and summer time in New York differs from the German date. In addition, there are - as is often the case with electronic trading venues - extended trading hours, during which the volume is significantly lower. These are from 7:00 am to 9:30 am local time (“ pre-market session ”) and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm local time (“ after-market session ”).

On 17 July 1995, the closing Nasdaq Composite - stock index to 1,005.89 points for the first time above the limit of 1,000 points. On March 10, 2000, the index marked an all-time high of 5,048.62 points and signaled the beginning of the end of the dot-com boom . On April 23, 2015, the index reached a new all-time high after more than 15 years.
