Freight Rover was a British commercial vehicle manufacturer from Birmingham .

The company was founded in 1981 as the Austin Rover Group's own brand for pickup trucks. The name was chosen analogously to Land Rover and Range Rover . The background was the break-up and reprivatisation of the nationalized BLMC by the new British government under Margaret Thatcher . The Leyland Trucks and Buses became the Leyland Trucks Division. In 1987 the bus division was spun off and sold to Volvo in 1988 .

The Rover Group co-founded Leyland DAF with DAF and brought Leyland Trucks and Freight Rover into the company. DAF held 60 percent and the Rover Group 40 percent of the shares in Leyland DAF.
