Headquarters in San Jose

Xilinx, Inc. is the world's largest developer and manufacturer of programmable logic ICs , so-called field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) . The company was founded in 1984 by Ross Freeman (FPGA inventor), Bernie Vonderschmitt ( fabless pioneer) and Jim Barnett and is based in Silicon Valley . The company's headquarters are in San José, California . The European headquarters are in Dublin and the Asian headquarters in Singapore. Xilinx does not have its own semiconductor production facility , but is a fabless IC manufacturer .

FPGA from Xilinx

Xilinx manufactures FPGA and CPLD devices that are used in a wide variety of applications in telecommunications, automotive , consumer , defense and other areas. Mainly four component families are produced: simple logic (Coolrunner), low-cost applications (Spartan), medium-sized areas (Kintex) and high-performance applications (Virtex), together with the required components such as PROMs .

The Virtex family is of particular interest to system-on-a-chip developers because some components in this family contain complete PowerPC cores as discrete hardware blocks directly in the FPGA chip. This means that specific programs or entire operating systems such as µCLinux or RTOS can run on these chips , while at the same time the logic gates in the chip can be fully used to expand functionality. It can e.g. B. peripheral components or co-processors can be implemented. SoC systems can also be implemented using SoftCores such as Xilinx's own MicroBlaze or other synthesizable processor cores in Xilinx FPGAs without a PowerPC core.

The FPGA series Virtex-II Pro, Virtex-4, Virtex-5, and Virtex-6 contain up to two embedded IBM PowerPC cores of the 405 or 440 series. FPGAs of the current Zynq 7000 family are included for SoC applications instead a multi-core processor with ARM architecture (ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore).

With the Virtex2 family at the beginning of 2006, Xilinx was the first manufacturer whose FPGAs are partially reconfigurable. This means that parts of the chip can be reconfigured during runtime and the functions can be exchanged.

Other major FPGA manufacturers include Altera , Lattice Semiconductor Corporation , Actel , Quicklogic, and Atmel .
