National Semiconductor (usually referred to as 'National' for short) was an integrated circuit manufacturer . The company was headquartered in Santa Clara (California / USA). In autumn 2011 it was taken over by Texas Instruments .

history

National was founded on May 27, 1959 in Danbury, Connecticut, by several engineers from Sperry Rand Corporation . In 1967 the head office was moved to Santa Clara, California. Over the years National bought several other companies, such as Fairchild Semiconductor in 1987 and Cyrix in 1997. However, as the focus became more and more on analog technology, these companies were spun off again over time. After Fairchild Semiconductor was made a separate company again in 1997, the Cyrix Microprocessors Division was sold in 1999 to the Taiwanese company VIA Technologies . In 2002 National's Information Appliance Division was sold to AMD. Other primarily digital businesses, such as wireless chipsets, image sensors and I / O chipsets for PCs, were either discontinued or sold. The aim was to position National as a supplier of analog semiconductor components. On September 23, 2011, National was acquired by Texas Instruments for $ 6.5 billion.

Products

National Semiconductor LM386 low voltage audio power amplifier

National Semiconductor's product portfolio prior to its takeover by TI u. a. Products from the areas of power management, audio and operational amplifiers, communication interface products, sensors and data converters. These products are now being integrated into TI's product range, with the National Semiconductor name disappearing with product updates.

Before concentrating on analog semiconductors, National also had digital components such as logic modules , memories and microprocessors ( NS320xx , SC / MP , Geode ) in its range.

Locations

National's production facilities were most recently in South Portland (USA), Greenock (Scotland) and Malacca (Malaysia), while others in Arlington (USA) and Suzhou (China) were closed in 2009. A good half of the 18 development centers were in the USA, the rest in Europe and Asia. The company's European headquarters was located in Germany ( Fürstenfeldbruck ).
