history
In the years after 1980, the computer-aided development of electronic circuits and assemblies within the framework of computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided design (CAD) became more and more present and market-defining. Mentor Graphics was founded in 1981 by former Tektronix development engineers with the aim of offering a variety of software products in this area.
Workstations from the manufacturer Apollo Computer , founded just a year earlier, were used as the first hardware platform for Mentor's EDA software . In 1982 the first EDA software product was introduced, the IDEA 1000 program .
In March 2009 the company announced a merger with Valor Computerized Systems .
In 2016, the Elliott Management Corporation hedge fund bought 8.1% of the shares in Mentor with the aim of massively increasing its value; As a result, Mentor worked out strategic alternatives with the involvement of Bank of America , also with the aim of selling. On November 14, 2016, Siemens announced the acquisition of Mentor Graphics for $ 4.5 billion. The takeover of Mentor in the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software division of the "Digital Factory Division" was completed in March 2017, quote: "Customers will continue to be supplied with the same products and solutions."
