The Siemens Product Lifecycle Management Software Inc. , shortly Siemens PLM Software (formerly known as UGS Corporation , previously known as Unigraphics Solutions Inc. ) is an American software developer from Plano (Texas) , which refers to products in the 3D representation of the CAD -Development and specialized in PLM software .

After the takeover by Siemens AG , the company operates as Siemens PLM Software and is part of the Digital Factory (DF PL) division.

Ownership

The company is now owned by Siemens - the EU Commission approved the takeover unconditionally after the antitrust review was completed.

Products

The most important products in the company's program are the NX programs , a commercial program package for the areas of CAD , CAM and CAE , as well as the Teamcenter program package , which supports the management of construction data ( PDM ) and construction within the company group ( cPD or cPDM ) . The product range also includes I-DEAS NX , NX , Solid Edge , Tecnomatix , Plant Simulation , RobCad, NX Nastran , Simcenter, Jack, SDK, Femap , D-Cubed , JT , PLM Vis, PLM XML and Parasolid .

The company's products are mainly used in the aerospace industry, in companies in the defense sector, by manufacturers in the mechanical engineering, automotive and transport sectors, as well as in the electronics and telecommunications industries for 3D design, design-related data and parts management and to support group-wide design cooperation and production planning used.

history

Last known as UGS, it was founded as United Computing in 1963 over a barber shop in Torrance, California. The first salable product was called UNIAPT. It was developed in 1969 by the then United Computing company and was one of the first CAM products for end customers worldwide . In 1973 the software source code for the Automated Drafting and Machining (ADAM) program was acquired by MCS . This source code was the basis of a software called UNI-GRAPHICS , which was sold as Unigraphics from 1975 .

In the following year United Computing was taken over by the aviation company McDonnell Douglas , which built up several new CAD / CAM departments, one of them under the name Unigraphics. In 1980 Unigraphics was released for sale as the group's first hardware and software package for designing three-dimensional objects.

When the company was taken over by McDonnell Douglas , the company's headquarters were relocated to St. Louis . In 1991, the McDonnell Douglas Systems Integration departments, including Unigraphics, were taken over by EDS under the new name EDS Unigraphics . In 1997 the Unigraphics department was transformed into an independent subsidiary, Unigraphics Solutions , into which Intergraph's mechanical engineering software division , with its Solid Edge and EMS products , was integrated at the same time . EDS went public with part of the company, but remained the majority owner. During this time took Unigraphics even some companies, including previously in Ames (Iowa) located BEEN Engineering Animation Inc., which deals with visualization.

In 1999, Applicon was taken over, which has been active in the EDA field for a long time . In August 2004, UGS moved its headquarters to Plano (Texas); from this point on the company was exclusively privately owned. In 2005, UGS also took over Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd.

On January 25, 2007, Siemens announced that it was planning to acquire UGS for integration into its Automation & Drives Division for $ 3.5 billion. The responsible institutions of the EU Commission have examined the takeover and approved it unconditionally. This enabled customers to be offered hardware, software and support for the digital factory from a single source. Since the takeover, the company has been called "Siemens Product Lifecycle Management Software Inc." The headquarters are in Plano (Texas) .

At the beginning of 2016 it was announced that Siemens would take over CD-adapco for a purchase price of 970 million US dollars, thereby expanding the product portfolio in the field of numerical simulation to include established flow analysis software.

The takeover of Mentor Graphics announced at the end of 2016 was completed in April 2017 . The purchase price was $ 4.5 billion. The merger created the world's largest provider of industrial software for product design, simulation, verification, testing and manufacturing.
