Solid Edge is a 2D / 3D CAD system from Siemens PLM Software .
description
Solid Edge uses the Parasolid core from the same company as the modeling core. The first version of Solid Edge was introduced to the public in November 1995.
The program is one of those CAD systems that were developed directly for Windows and not adopted as a port from another platform. The original development comes from Intergraph . Up to version 4 the modeling kernel ACIS from Spatial was used, which from version 5 was replaced by the Parasolid kernel from Unigraphics Solutions .
From version 18, simple finite element calculations can be carried out directly using the integrated Femap Express module. With the release of the Solid Edge ST2 version (November 2009), an extended FEA functionality is also available in the new Solid Edge Simulation module.
The manufacturer UGS was taken over by Siemens in early 2007 .
There is also a student version, but the data format is not compatible with the commercial version. This allows you to open data from a commercial version, but when you save the file, it is converted into the format of the student version and is therefore no longer readable in a commercial version. With the release of the ST4 from Solid Edge, a test version is also available for download. This enables Solid Edge to be tested for 45 days.
With the ST6, Siemens started a new sales model and is also offering Solid Edge for rent. From version ST9 onwards, licensing and settings can also be saved via the cloud.
The Solid Edge version ST8MP3 officially supported Windows 10.
The Solid Edge Viewer was adopted with the ST10. With the Free2D license, all Solid Edge files can now be opened for measurement and viewing.
So-called "Maintenance Packs" (MP for short) are published by Siemens at irregular intervals. Maintenance customers can download these maintenance packs from the Siemens portal.
Modules
Solid Edge offers a variety of basic modules that provide tools for a wide variety of tasks of a designer:
- Part ( part modeling; file extension: ".par")
- Sheet Metal (sheet metal part modeling and processing; file extension: ".psm")
- Assembly (assemblies, construction under assembly, welding; file extension: ".asm")
- Weldment (environment for welding ; file extension: ".pwd", functions are also available in the assembly environment ) (will not be further developed)
- Draft (creation of a technical drawing ; file extension: ".dft")
- Synchronous Technology (ST) describes a new type of historical-free component or assembly modeling. This create and modify methodology is currently available for Part, Sheet Metal, and Assembly.
Further modules (depending on the license):
- Engineering Reference (creation and calculations of: gears , springs, cam disks and shafts)
- FEMAP Express ( FEM calculations)
- StandardParts (screw connections)
- Feature Recognizer (form element recognition of external data, deleted from ST3 due to better functionality with synchronous technology)
- Virtual Studio + (creation of rendered images) → KeyShot has been available since the current version (ST7), Virtual Studio + is only available up to and including ST6
- Frame Design (creation of frame constructions)
- Wire Harness (creating wire harnesses in assemblies)
- XpresRoute (creation of pipelines or pipe sections)
- Solid Edge Simulation (extended FEM calculation options, available from version ST2)
- Solid Edge Flow (flow simulation, available from ST10)
- Solid Edge Generative Design (optimization of weight and strength through calculated topology, available from ST10)
- Solid Edge TechPublications (For technical documentation)
- Solid Edge Free 2D & Viewer is included free of charge in the installation of the ST10, it only has to be activated.
