NX is an interactive CAD / CAM / CAE system. Originally from Unigraphics Solutions based on our own Parasolid - modeling kernel developed the company was founded by Siemens adopted and has since been trading as Siemens Digital Industries software, which further develop the software and distribute.
The software has a complex license model: functions of the program are divided into "applications" with general functionality and are bundled in special packages. Functions can only be used if the corresponding service package has been activated. The higher-level application is NX Gateway , for which every NX user must have a license. The other applications are optional and can be configured individually depending on the user. The last two major releases are usually supported. Errors in older versions are only corrected if they are reproducible in the currently supported versions. Since version NX9, only a 64-bit version is offered; 64-bit support was implemented with the NX4, parallel to the 32-bit version. The version for MacOS was discontinued with NX12. The Linux variant has only been supported in batch mode since version 1847 (the name of this Linux version is "NX-Batch") (no GUI application anymore). With version 1847 the application is maintained as a "Continuous Release", similar to the versioning scheme of Windows 10 (Release Numbers for 1847 Series> PDF p. 19).
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
The CAD functions automate the usual construction, drafting and drawing work in today's manufacturing plants. NX is a fully three-dimensional, double-precision system that allows the exact description of almost any geometric shape. By connecting these shapes, drawings for products can be created, analyzed and generated.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
The CAM functions provide NC programming for modern machine tools using the NX construction model to describe the finished part.
Once design is complete, the Manufacturing application allows you to select the geometry that describes the part, enter manufacturing data such as tool diameter, and automatically generate a Cutter Location Source File (CLSF) that is used to control the most NC machines can be used.
Data for CNC burning machines can even be read from the existing geometry.
Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)
The CAE functions offer many possibilities for the simulation of products, assemblies and part services in the entire area of construction.

The program has several programming interfaces (APIs) for the automation of work processes:
