criticism
Bain Capital is accused of exploiting various companies and causing them to go bankrupt:
GS Technologies, a Kansas City steel mill, had been in operation since 1888. In 1993, Bain took over a majority stake, and barely ten years later the company was bankrupt. 750 people lost their jobs at the time, according to a report by the US TV station MSNBC. Bain, on the other hand, benefited from the deal: the company earned twelve million dollars, but previously only invested eight million dollars. In addition, Bain apparently raked in at least $ 4.5 million in consultancy fees.
American Pad & Paper was bought by Bain Capital in 1992. In 1999, two of the company's factories closed, 385 jobs lost, and the company was $ 392 million in debt. In 2000 the company declared bankruptcy. The Boston Globe reported that Bain made $ 100 million in Ampad - including tens of million in management fees - and had only invested $ 5 million himself.
Bain Capital and Goldman Sachs bought Dade International in 1994 for around $ 450 million. Around 900 jobs were deleted or outsourced. Another 1,000 workers were laid off over the next several years; the company's credit debt quadrupled. In 2002 the company declared bankruptcy.
In 1997, Bain Capital bought LIVE Entertainment for $ 150 million. Every fourth of the 166 employees was subsequently laid off. Bain Capital made $ 578 million in profits from Stage Stores, American Pad & Paper, GS Industries, Dade, and Details, all five of which went bankrupt a short time later.
