The first settlers came to what is now Plano in the early 1840s. The first settlement grew quickly. When a post office was finally set up, one had to decide on a name for the place. The settlers suggested “Plano”, Spanish for “flat”, according to the local geographic conditions. In 1872 the place received a train station and finally in 1873 city rights. In the 1980s, many larger companies moved to the city.

population

Plano is known as the safest city and one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. Plano had the highest average income of any city over 250,000 in the United States in 2007 at $ 84,492. According to the crime statistics, there are only about four murders per year in Plano (as of 2006). This is by far the lowest murder rate of all cities with over 250,000 inhabitants in the USA. Forbes magazine named Plano the safest city in America in 2010 with a population of over 250,000.

Internet phenomenon

Plano achieved a certain level of awareness in Germany through the Internet television program Ehrensenf . This reported about two young Americans who let visitors to their website decide in an online vote in which American city they would live in 2007. Ehrensenf ironically called on his German viewers to vote for Plano, as this city would be the epitome of boring and stuffy American province. The official vote ended as follows: 973,946 Germans then voted for Plano and had a considerable influence on the voting results. As a result, Plano ended up in second place behind Denver . This result was heavily criticized in the forums by Ehrensenf, because the official voting results for Plano were repeatedly "corrected" downwards. German and American media reported on it. The two Americans ultimately did not go to Plano.
