Seth Jones (born October 3, 1994 in Plano , Texas ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League since January 2016 . Previously, the defender spent almost two and a half years with the Nashville Predators , who selected him in fourth position in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft .

Career

Jones played for the Dallas Junior Stars from 2008 to 2010. In the Bantam Draft 2009 of the Western Hockey League (WHL) he was selected in the first round in eleventh position by the Everett Silvertips . However, Jones decided to move to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and played in the United States Hockey League for two years . On April 23, 2012, the Silvertips transferred Jones' WHL rights to the Portland Winterhawks . Two weeks later he signed a contract with the Winterhawks that binds the player to the club for the 2012/13 WHL season , after which Portland gave four of their players to Everett to complete the transfer with the Silvertips.

In the 2012/13 WHL season , the Winterhawks won the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the best team in the preliminary round after they had the best regular season in their franchise history with 57 wins from 72 league games . Seth Jones ran it in 61 games for Portland, scoring 14 goals and 42 assists . His 56 scorer points were the fourth most among defenders in the league and most of a rookie defender; his plus / minus value of +46 was the seventh best among all field players in the league. For these achievements he was awarded the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best WHL rookie. In the 2013 WHL play-offs , the Portland Winterhawks won their third Ed Chynoweth Cup after beating the Everett Silvertips , Spokane Chiefs , Kamloops Blazers and the Edmonton Oil Kings after 1982 and 1998 . In the subsequent Memorial Cup 2013 , the Winterhawks lost the final game against the Halifax Mooseheads from the Québec Major Junior Hockey League 4-6.

In the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , Jones was selected in the first round in fourth position overall by the Nashville Predators . In July 2013, the American signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Nashville Predators.

On January 6, 2016, Jones was given to Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the center Ryan Johansen . In the 2017/18 season he achieved his best offensive statistics by far with 57 points and placed second behind Artemi Panarin in the team's internal scorer list . At the same time, he set a new franchise record for defenders of the Blue Jackets with this value and was elected to the NHL Second All-Star Team at the end of the season .

Jones set a new NHL record as part of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs . In the first game of the Conference quarter-finals against Tampa Bay Lightning , which the Blue Jackets lost 3-2 in the fifth overtime , the American achieved an operating time of 65 minutes and 6 seconds. He exceeded the previous record of Sergei Subow , who was 63 minutes and 51 seconds on the ice in the conference semifinals of the playoffs 2003 in the first game against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim .

International

Seth Jones represented his home country with the US national team for the first time in 2011 at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge . In this tournament he won the silver medal after a final defeat against Team Canada Ontario. Additionally, Jones was elected to the tournament's All-Star Team. He had another assignment for Team USA in the same year at the U18 Junior World Championship 2011 , in which the Americans won the final against the Swedish selection after a goal in overtime . At the U18 World Cup the following year , Team USA won the gold medal again after beating the Swedish team. Seth Jones was the team captain and scored eight points in six games , making it the second best point collector for the Americans behind Nic Kerdiles .

At the U20 Junior World Championships in 2013 , he and his team defeated the Swedish selection in the final and consequently received his third gold medal at the Junior World Championships in a row. Jones served as assistant captain at the tournament and scored as many points in seven games.
