Pierre-Luc Dubois (born June 24, 1998 in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with a US passport who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League since June 2016 . The center was selected in third position by the Blue Jackets in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft .
Career
Pierre-Luc Dubois was born in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, but spent his childhood in Europe, including Germany, where his father, Éric Dubois , was a professional ice hockey player at the time. A little later the family returned to Canada, where Pierre-Luc Dubois was active in his youth for the Association du Hockey Mineur de Mont-Joli . In 2014, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles selected him in fifth position in the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), for which he played at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. At the turn of the year he represented his home country at the U18 World Cup in 2015 and won the bronze medal there with the team. At the Screaming Eagles he finished the season with 45 points from 54 games, before winning the gold medal with the Canadian selection a little later at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 . In the 2015/16 season he achieved his breakthrough in the LHJMQ when he reached 3rd place on the scorer list with 99 points and was elected to the league's Second All-Star team. He was also honored with the Trophée Paul Dumont as “Personality of the Year” and the Trophée Michael Bossy as the league's most promising young player. A little later, Dubois also received the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award as the most hopeful talent in the entire Canadian Hockey League .
Dubois was available for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2016 and was considered a likely top 5 pick, so the International Scouting Service placed him 5th overall and the Central Scouting Service 1st overall among North American outfield players. In the actual draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him in third position and signed him on June 29, 2016. In the subsequent pre-season he was not recommended for the NHL squad of the Jackets and was therefore sent back to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for the 2016/17 season. Over the turn of the year he took part in the U20 World Cup 2017 with Canada's U20 team and won the silver medal with the team in his own country.
In January 2017, the Screaming Eagles gave him to the Armada de Blainville-Boisbriand , which in return sent Mathias Laferrière and two draft voting rights to Cape Breton. With the Armada, Dubois subsequently reached the final for the Coupe du Président , but lost 4-0 to the Saint John Sea Dogs with the team . With the start of the 2017/18 season, Dubois made the jump to the NHL Blue Jackets squad and scored his first goal on his debut in October 2017. He finished his first NHL season with 48 points, making him the third-best scorer on his team, while setting a new franchise record for most points from a Blue Jackets rookie .
After his first professional season, Dubois made his debut for the senior national team of Canada at the 2018 World Cup , where he finished fourth with the team. After increasing his personal statistics to 61 points in the 2018/19 season, he was once again part of the Canadian squad at the 2019 World Cup and won the silver medal there with the team.
