geography

Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts is located in the middle of the Laurentine Mountains , on the upper reaches of the Rivière du Nord . This tributary of the Ottawa has its source around 5 km north of the city center in Lac Brûlé . The western districts are on the banks of the Lac des Sables. There are also numerous other small lakes, such as B. Lac à la Truite. Neighboring municipalities are Val-des-Lacs in the north, Lantier in the northeast, Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides in the east, Val-David in the southeast, Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard in the south, Ivry-sur-le-Lac and Saint- Faustin – Lac-Carré in the west and Lac-Supérieur in the north-west.

history

The first families settled here permanently in 1849, mostly Catholic French-Canadians . The first residents ran a dairy farm and worked as lumberjacks . With the opening of a railway line for the Canadian Pacific Railway from Saint-Jérôme , the village experienced a significant growth spurt from 1892. Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts developed into the preferred excursion and vacation destination of the (mostly Anglophone) Montreal upper class, who had stately villas built here; a small Jewish community also established itself. Several sanatoriums and a hospital for tuberculosis sufferers were built , but they no longer exist today.

The community received city status as early as 1915. The place name is reminiscent of Saint Agatha of Catania on the one hand, and the location in the mountains on the other. It was officially used for the first time in 1879 by the newly opened post office. The highway to Montreal opened in 1965, the railway line closed in 1981 and converted into a cycle path. After a carpet factory was closed at the beginning of the 1980s, tourism was increasingly promoted and the city was positioned as a year-round destination. In addition, there was the expansion to a regional service and education center. In 2002 the provincial government ordered the merger with the communes of Sainte-Agathe-Nord and Ivry-sur-le-Lac. However, the latter decided in a 2006 referendum to split off from Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts.

Another important road link is Route 117 (Montreal - Rouyn-Noranda ). The former railway line has been converted into a long-distance cycle path that is part of the Route Verte network.

Tourism is of great economic importance . Due to its scenic location in the midst of mountains, forests and lakes, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts is a popular excursion and holiday destination for residents of the Montreal conurbation. The offer includes several campsites, a theater, a sailing school, beaches, two golf courses and an art museum. Numerous cultural events are also held.
