Alexander Wennberg (born September 22, 1994 in Nacka ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League since May 2014 .

Career

Alexander Wennberg played in Boo IF's youth department before moving to Djurgårdens IF for the 2010/11 season. There the attacker was on the ice for the next two years, especially for the J18 and for the J20 in the J20 SuperElit , the highest junior league in Sweden. After making his debut in a league match with the men of Djurgårdens IF in the 2011/12 season, he was regularly used there from the beginning of the 2012/13 season in the Allsvenskan , the second Swedish league. He was then selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 14th position in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . After a total of three years in the ranks of Djurgårdens IF, Wennberg moved to Frölunda HC in the summer of 2013 , with whom he then played for a year in the country's highest league, the Svenska Hockeyligan .

In the summer of 2014 Wennberg finally switched to the organization of the Columbus Blue Jackets and promptly established himself there in the NHL squad. In the 2016/17 season, the Swede achieved his best personal statistics to date with 59 points from 80 games. He then signed a new six-year contract in Columbus in September 2017, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.9 million.

International

At the international level, Wennberg represented his home country in the junior division at the U18 World Championships in 2012 as well as at the U20 World Championships in 2013 and 2014 , where he won the silver medal. He made his debut for the senior national team of Sweden at the 2016 World Cup and achieved sixth place with the team.
