Ryan Murray (born September 27, 1993 in White City , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . Since 2013, the defender has played for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League , which selected him in second position in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .
Career
Ryan Murray was selected in the 2008 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the first round in ninth position by the Everett Silvertips . Then the player completed a season for the Moose Jaw Canucks in the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League , a regional junior league. For the Silvertips, the defender made his debut as a 15-year-old in the play-offs of the 2008/09 WHL season . In the following season Murray played together with Radko Gudas in a defensive row. In the play-offs of this season, Ryan Murray came as a 16-year-old WHL rookie to up to 35 minutes of ice time per game due to injury-related failures of his teammates . The Everett Silvertips were eliminated in the first play-off round against the Kelowna Rockets ; Murray scored just as many points scorer in the seven games and was the third-best scorer within the team.
In the 2010/11 WHL season , Ryan Murray was named assistant captain of the Silvertips. The defender played 70 games in the regular season and with 46 points scored his statistically best WHL season. In the 2011/12 season , the defender who had been appointed team captain had to be out of play for seven weeks due to an ankle injury early in the season. Overall, Murray came this season to 50 appearances for the Everett Silvertips, which were eliminated in the first play-off round for the fifth year in a row.
At the NHL Entry Draft 2012 he was selected in the first round in second position by the Columbus Blue Jackets , for which he has been used regularly since the 2013/14 season. In July 2019, he signed a new two-year contract in Columbus that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.6 million.
International
Ryan Murray represented his home country with the Canadian national team for the first time at an international tournament at the U18 Junior World Championship 2010 , in which the Canadians were without a medal. The following Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2010 was more successful , in which he led the Canadian selection as team captain to the gold medal. Outside the medal ranks, the team stayed again at the U18 Junior World Championship the following year . In this tournament, however, he ran again as captain and was with 10 points scorer in seven completed games behind Ryan Murphy, the second best point collector in Canada.
At the U20 Junior World Cup in 2012 , the Canadian selection lost the semi-finals against the Russian national team . In the following game for third place they defeated the Finnish selection and consequently won the bronze medal. In the same year, Murray also made his debut in the men's division when he finished fifth with Team Canada at the 2012 World Cup .
After four years he was part of the Canadian squad again at the 2016 World Cup and won the gold medal there.

Ryan Murray is a two-way defender with playful qualities on both defense and offense. His style of play is compared to that of Scott Niedermayer . The defender is considered a good skater and intelligent player. Murray himself describes his playmaking skills as his greatest strength.
