Ryan Murphy (born March 31, 1993 in Aurora , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League (AHL) since August 2020, where he plays the position of defender .
Career
Murphy began his career in the junior leagues of the greater Toronto area and was selected as first defender in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection in third place overall by the Kitchener Rangers . In his debut season he managed 33 assists in 63 games, which earned him a nomination for the First All-Rookie Team of the Ontario Hockey League . With 17 points from 20 games, he also made a significant contribution to the Rangers' entry into the semi-finals of the play-offs . In the following season, the defender was able to double his points and was the most dangerous defender in the league with 26 goals. Murphy was then elected to the first All-Star Team of the OHL at the end of the season .
In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Ryan Murphy was selected in the first round in twelfth position by the Carolina Hurricanes and signed an NHL entry contract that same year . In the run-up to the draft, the scouts particularly emphasized his good shot, his agility and his skills in the majority game .
After the draft, Murphy stayed in Kitchener for two more seasons and led the team again in 2011/12 as assistant captain in the semi-finals of the play-offs. He was the best assists in the league with 20 assists. In the following season, the defender was named team captain of the Rangers and elected for the third time in a row in an All-Star team of the league. During the season, he made his professional debut for the Carolina Hurricanes in February 2013 when he made four appearances in the NHL.
In the 2013/14 season Murphy was permanently in the squad of the Hurricanes and played 48 games in the NHL. At the same time he was used for their farm team, the Charlotte Checkers , in the American Hockey League , where he achieved an average of one point per game in 22 missions. The following season he was nominated for the AHL All-Star Classic . Over the years, the defender shuttled back between the Hurricanes and Checkers squad without being permanently in the NHL squad. In June 2017, Carolina finally parted with his former first-round suffrage when Murphy was transferred to the Calgary Flames along with goalkeeper Eddie Läck and a seventh-round suffrage in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Hurricanes received Keegan Kanzig and a six-round vote in the same draft. In addition, Carolina continued to take over half of Läck's salary.
Immediately after the transfer, however, the Flames paid Murphy the salary of the outstanding final year of the contract, so that on July 1 he was considered a free agent and found a new employer in the Minnesota Wild . Even with the Wild, he failed to establish himself permanently in the NHL, so he was given to the New Jersey Devils in January 2019 in exchange for Michael Kapla . There he completed all games for the farm team Binghamton Devils in the AHL by the end of the season, with the exception of one NHL game . In July 2019, Murphy signed a contract with Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL), where he spent a season. In August 2020, the defender joined the newly formed Henderson Silver Knights from the AHL.

Ryan Murphy represented his home province of Ontario at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 and won the silver medal with the team. In the following year he was appointed to Team Canada for the first time at the U18 Junior World Championship and was the best scorer of his team with 13 points and the best defender of the tournament. He received the award for best defender. However, the team was defeated by Russia in the game for third place and thus remained without a medal. At the U18 Junior World Championship 2013 Murphy was again in the Canadian squad.
