Eddie Läck (born January 5, 1988 in Norrtälje ) is a former Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . Between 2013 and 2018 he played 148 games for the Vancouver Canucks , Carolina Hurricanes , Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
Career
Beginnings in Sweden
Läck began his career in his hometown, where he ran through the junior teams of Norrtälje IK. During this time he also took part in two TV swaddling tournaments, each in the second team of the Stockholm region . In 2004 he changed clubs and from then on played for the U18 youth team of Djurgårdens IF . In 2005 he reached the J18 Allsvenskan runner-up with the DIF. Two years later he joined the U20 juniors of Leksands IF , who played in Sweden's top junior division, the J20 SuperElit .
During the 2006/07 season he made his professional ice hockey debut when he played for the Leksands IF men's team in a total of 3 games in HockeyAllsvenskan , Sweden's second-highest division. In the following season he made 26 appearances in the Allsvesenkan with an average goal of 1.96, but was also used in the U20 juniors. In the 2009/09 season, Läck established himself as a regular goalkeeper of the professional team, displacing the former NHL goalkeeper Ed Belfour from this position. He achieved an average of 2.02 goals against and a catch quota of 93.0% in 32 games.
Before the 2009 NHL Entry Draft , he was ranked ninth in the list of the NHL Central Scouting Bureau among European goalkeepers, but was not selected. Therefore, he stayed in Sweden and after three years at Leksands IF moved to the Elitserien , the top division, to Brynäs IF , where he received a two-year contract. He made his Elitserien debut on October 17, 2009 when he replaced Jacob Markström in the Brynäs goal. Läck played a total of 14 games as a back-up for Markström in the 2009/10 season.
In the American Hockey League (2010-2013)
The Vancouver Canucks scout , Lars Lindgren , followed Läck's development for several years and convinced the Canucks management to sign Läck in April 2010. Läck received a two-year contract and was subsequently used with the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League .
NHL
At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Läck established himself at the Vancouver Canucks and played 41 games in each of the following two seasons. As part of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , it was given to the Carolina Hurricanes , who gave the Canucks a second-round vote for this draft and a seventh-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . In Carolina, he formed the goalkeeper duo with Cam Ward , replacing Anton Chudobin , who was given to the Anaheim Ducks shortly after the Läck transfer . Läck then stayed in Carolina for two seasons until June 2017, before he was transferred to the Calgary Flames together with Ryan Murphy and a seven-round suffrage in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Hurricanes received Keegan Kanzig and a six-round vote in the same draft. In addition, Carolina continued to take over half of Läck's salary.
In Calgary, however, the Swede could not establish himself permanently in the NHL squad and lost his place as a backup from Mike Smith to David Rittich . As a result, the Flames gave him in December 2017 in exchange for Dalton Prout to the New Jersey Devils . With the Devils, he was also mainly used in the AHL, before he could only play six competitive games in the 2018/19 season due to injury. Due to chronic hip problems, he finally had to end his career early in the summer of 2019 and moved to Arizona State University as a goalkeeping coach with immediate effect .
International
Läck made his debut for the Swedish national team at the 2017 World Cup and won the gold medal there with the team.
