Jacob Markström (born January 31, 1990 in Gävle ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since March 2014 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2013 World Cup .
Career
Jacob Markström began his career at IK Sätra in 2005 before moving to the U18 juniors at Brynäs IF in 2006 . In his first season he was a regular goalkeeper in Brynäs and finished second with the team after the basic season in the northern group of the U18 Allsvenskan. In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated in the first round.
For the 2007/08 season Markström moved to the U20 Juniors from Brynäs in the first-class SuperElit. There, too, he was allowed to play most of the games. In the main round of the northern group, which lasted 27 games, he led all goalkeepers with a goal against goal of 1.8 and a catch rate of 93.8 percent and was able to win 13 of his 15 appearances. Brynäs finished the lap in the top position. Markström was also planned as a regular goalkeeper in the top eight round of the SuperElit and played seven games, but only three weeks after his 18th birthday he was called up for the first time in the professional team, which was at the bottom of the table in the first Swedish league, the Elitserien .
On February 23, 2008 he made his debut in a 2: 4 defeat against Frölunda HC and was used in another six games, of which he won two. After the end of the regular season Brynäs was still in last place and had to play in the Kvalserien against relegation to the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , while Markström should be sent back to the junior team. However, since goalkeeper Markus Korhonen had to cancel at short notice for the first game in the relegation round, Markström was recalled. He then played nine of the ten games in the Kvalserien, had the best catch rate and the best goals against goals of all goalkeepers and won six games, which Brynäs secured relegation.
Shortly after the end of the Kvalerien, Markström joined the Swedish youth national team at the U18 World Cup , where they finished fourth. He was also noticed in North America and was in the top position in the ranking of European goalkeeping talents for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft . The Florida Panthers finally selected him in the second round at position 31.
In the 2008/09 season Jacob Markström was the goalkeeper of the professional team at Brynäs IF and was able to establish himself among the best goalkeepers in the Elitserien at the start of the season. In the following season he was able to improve again and received the Honkens trofé as the best goalkeeper of the Elitserien. He was also elected Årets nykomling of the league. In May 2010 received a three-year contract with the Panthers, who use him in the 2010/11 season in the American Hockey League .
At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the men's national team and won the gold medal with it.
After almost four years in the Panthers franchise, they transferred him to the Vancouver Canucks together with Shawn Matthias on March 4, 2014, one day before the trade deadline . In return, Roberto Luongo moved to Florida. While preparing for the 2014/15 season , Markström was unable to prevail against the competition and was handed over to the AHL farm team Utica Comets . It was only when regular goalkeeper Ryan Miller suffered a sprained knee in February 2015 that Markström was reappointed to the NHL squad.
In September 2016 he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and achieved third place with the team. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , Markström rose to become the goalkeeper in Vancouver. He was able to hold this position in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons .
Markström took part in the 2020 NHL Allstar Game for Team Pacific . He was nominated to replace Marc-André Fleury .
