Thatcher Demko (born December 8, 1995 in San Diego , California ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since April 2016 and for their farm team , the Utica Comets , in the American Hockey League is playing.

Career

Youth and college

Demko came to ice hockey through his father, who comes from the Canadian province of Ontario. He began his career in the junior leagues of his native San Diego in southern California and moved to the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League at the age of 15 . There he drew the attention of the US National Team Development Program , into which he was accepted that same season 2011/12. In the following season he was the goalkeeper of the U18 team and graduated from high school a year earlier than usual in order to move to Boston College as a 17-year-old .

Although Demko was the league's youngest player in his freshman year in Boston, he played more than half of his team's games in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He finished the 2013-14 season with a 91.9% catch rate and won the Hockey East division with Boston College . Prior to the 2014 NHL Entry Draft , the majority of scouts rated him the best goalkeeper in his class. The Vancouver Canucks finally selected him in the second round in a total of 36th position.

A year after the draft, it was revealed that Demko had played with a bilateral hip injury for four years. In April 2015, he therefore underwent an operation that also improved his ability to move on the ice. In his third year at Boston College, he set a new team record with ten shutouts in 2015/16 and was honored with the Mike Richter Award for best goalkeeper at the NCAA. In addition, Demko was nominated as one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award .

Vancouver Canucks

In April 2016, Thatcher Demko signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks and made his professional debut for their farm team, the Utica Comets , in the American Hockey League (AHL) in the 2016/17 season . As a regular goalkeeper before Richard Bachman , Demko was used in 45 games for the Comets. In the following season he improved his catch quota from 90.7 to 92.2 percent, qualified with the team for the play-offs and took part in the AHL All-Star Classic . He also made his NHL debut on March 31, 2018, when he was in the Canucks' goal for the full game in a 5-4 overtime against the Columbus Blue Jackets . This made him the second California-born goalkeeper after John Blue who came to use in the NHL.

International

During his time with the US National Team Development Program, Demko participated in several international tournaments, including the 2013 U18 World Junior Championship . In this he won the silver medal as a regular goalkeeper with the USA. At the U20 Junior World Championship two years later, he also played all appearances and finished the tournament with the third best catch rate from all goalkeepers, but failed with his team in the quarter-finals in the Russian selection. At the 2016 World Cup , Demko was appointed to the men's national team for the first time , but was not used as the third goalkeeper behind Mike Condon and Keith Kinkaid .
