After another season in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, Bachman signed on March 27, 2009 an entry contract with the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League (NHL), who had selected him in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in 120th position.
In the 2009/10 season, Bachman was mainly used by the Idaho Steelheads , a farm team of stars in the ECHL . The goalkeeper completed 35 games for the Steelheads and was nominated for the ECHL All-Rookie Team after the season . In the following season, the goalkeeper completed 55 games for the Texas Stars in the American Hockey League (AHL), another farm team of the Stars. In addition, Bachman completed his first game in the National Hockey League this season; In the game between the Dallas Stars and the Phoenix Coyotes , he was 9:35 minutes in goal and saved all four shots that came on his goal during this time. In the 2011/12 season, Richard Bachman played in 15 AHL and 18 NHL games. Following that season, he signed a new one-year contract worth $ 625,000.
In July 2013, Bachman signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers . In July 2015, he then joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent . There he was regularly on the ice with their farm team, the Utica Comets from the AHL. When this changed in the 2019/20 season, it was loaned to IK Oskarshamn from Svenska Hockeyligan in February 2020 until the end of the season .
