Christopher Tanev (born December 20, 1989 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League since May 2010 . His younger brother Brandon Tanev is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Christopher Tanev was born in East York . He has two brothers, Brandon and Kyle. Because of his previous small size (less than 1.60 meters), professional junior teams were reluctant to sign him. Because of this, the defender played roller hockey for some time . Tanev graduated from the East York Collegiate Institute with a high school degree .
Before joining the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers, Tanev played three seasons in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League (OPJHL). He began his career with the Durham Fury in the 2006/07 season, in which he could collect no goal, but nine assists in 40 games. The defender spent the next season with several teams: Durham Fury, Stouffville Spirit and the Markham Waxers . He managed to contribute 17 points (two goals and 15 assists) in 49 games for his teams this season. In the 2008/09 season Tanev played with the Waxers as assistant captain and led in this season all defenders in the league in scorer points (41 points in 50 games).
Dave Gagner , who coached his roller hockey team in his youth, became aware of Christopher Tanev at an NCAA tournament. Gagner reported his positive impressions to the Vancouver Canucks scout , Stan Smyl . On March 31, 2010, the Vancouver Canucks signed the defender as an undrafted free agent . The defender then spent three years alternating between the NHL and the Canucks farm teams in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Manitoba Moose and the Chicago Wolves . With the beginning of the 2013/14 season Tanev is an integral part of the NHL line-up.
International
For the Canadian national team , Tanev was on the ice for the first time at the 2016 World Cup and won the gold medal there with the team.
