Fredrik Elias Pettersson (born November 12, 1998 in Sundsvall ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since May 2018 . In the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in fifth position by the Canucks and ended the 2018/19 season with the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year. Before that, he played for the Växjö Lakers in his home country , with whom he became Swedish champion and received numerous individual awards. With the Swedish national team , the center won the gold medal at the 2018 World Cup .

Career

Elias Pettersson was born in Sundsvall and grew up around 100 kilometers away Ånge , where he played for Ånge IK in his youth . He then moved to the youth department of Timrå IK , for whose J20 he played in the J20 SuperElit , Sweden's highest junior league, from the 2014/15 season . In the course of the 2015/16 season, the attacker made his debut for the club's men's team in the Allsvenskan , the second highest Swedish league and therefore in the professional field. After scoring 41 points in 43 games for Timrå in the following year , the Swede was considered one of the outstanding talents for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2017 , as the Central Scouting Service of the National Hockey League (NHL) rated him second in Europe Field player a. In the actual draft he was subsequently selected in fifth place by the Vancouver Canucks .

In April 2017 Pettersson had already signed a three-year contract with the Växjö Lakers and thus switched to Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL). In the highest Swedish professional league, he promptly made his breakthrough, so that he was honored with numerous awards. In the regular season he led the entire league in scorer points (56) and in the plus / minus rating (+27), so that he was awarded the goldpuck as MVP and as the best striker of the SHL. At the same time he set a new record for the most points of a U20 player in the top Swedish division, which was previously held by Kent Nilsson (53 points; 1975/76 season ). As a result, he received the title of Årets nykomling as rookie of the year. In addition to his personal successes, the attacker also won the Swedish championship with the Växjö Lakers, to which he played a major role with the most goals (9) and points (19) in the playoffs. As a result, Pettersson was awarded the Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy as a playoff MVP, with the choice of the 14-member jury being unanimous for the first time in the history of the award.

In May 2018, Petterson finally signed an entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks. In the following pre-season he earned a place in the Canucks squad and finally made his debut in the NHL in October 2018. Despite an injury break and only eight games played, he led the rookies of the league at the end of the month with ten points and was consequently honored as NHL rookie of the month . Two months later he was given the award again before he ended the season with 28 goals, 38 assists and 66 points and thus topped the rookie scorer list in all three categories. As a result, he also received the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year at the end of the season and was also voted into the NHL All-Rookie Team .

International

Pettersson gained his first international experience with the Swedish U18 team, with which he won the silver medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 and the U18 World Cup in 2016 . He then took part in the U20 World Championships in 2017 and 2018 with the U20 national team, where he won another silver medal with the team in 2018. The attacker made his debut for the senior national team in his home country as part of the 2017/18 Euro Hockey Tour , before joining their squad at the 2018 World Cup a little later . There the Tre Kronor won the world title, but Pettersson broke his left thumb in the preliminary round and was unable to play the rest of the tournament after five games.
