Jacob "Jake" Virtanen (born August 17, 1996 in Abbotsford , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of Finnish descent who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks from the National Hockey League since July 2014 . The right winger was selected in sixth position by the Canucks in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft .
Career
youth
Jake Virtanen was born in Abbotsford in 1996 and began playing ice hockey as a toddler in nearby Langley . A little later he returned to his hometown and played until the end of the 2010/11 season for the Abbotsford Hawks in the Pacific Coast Bantam Hockey League . In the subsequent WHL Bantam Draft 2011 Virtanen was selected by the Calgary Hitmen in first position, where he spent the next season mainly at midget level with the Fraser Valley Bruins .
In December 2011 he was on the ice for the first time for the Hitmen in the Western Hockey League , but completed only nine games this season. Virtanen has been part of the Hitmen squad since the 2012/13 season , so that in his first full season he scored 34 points in 62 games. He also reached the conference final of the play-offs with the team , where they failed 3: 4 at the Edmonton Oil Kings . With the Canadian U18 national team, he also won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2013 .
After 71 points from 71 games in the following season , he is ranked 6th among the most promising outfield players in North America for the NHL Entry Draft 2014 by the Central Scouting Service . He also took part in the U18 Junior World Championships in Finland in spring 2014 and won the bronze medal there with the team. In the subsequent Entry Draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected him in sixth position and took him directly under contract in July 2014, although he is still active for the hitmen for the time being.
In 2015 he took part in the U20 World Cup in his own country and won the gold medal there with the team. After the WHL season ended, the attacker was appointed to the roster of the Utica Comets , which act as the Canucks farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), and made ten playoff appearances by the end of the 2014/15 season. The Comets failed only in the final of the Calder Cup against the Manchester Monarchs .
Vancouver Canucks
As a result, Virtanen completed the pre-season at the Canucks and was able to secure a regular place in this context, so that he was in the NHL squad with the start of the 2015/16 season. During the season he took part with the Canadian selection again in the U20 World Cup, but only finished sixth with the team. The attacker then spent most of the 2016/17 season in Utica before establishing himself in the Canucks squad at the beginning of the 2017/18 season.
