Quinton "Quinn" Hughes (born October 14, 1999 in Orlando , Florida ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since March 2019 . In the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , the seventh-position defender was selected by the Canucks. He took part in the 2018 World Cup with the USA national team.

Career

Quinn Hughes was born in Orlando when his father, Jim Hughes, was an assistant coach with the Orlando Solar Bears . Then the family moved to Toronto , where Jim was employed in the organization of the Toronto Maple Leafs , so that Quinn Hughes ran up in the junior division for the Toronto Marlboros, among others . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the defender switched to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the USA Hockey Association . With the team he took part in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the country, and was appointed to the Second All-Star Team in his second season . At the same time, the NTDP selections function as junior national teams, so that Hughes took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2015 before winning the gold medal with the U18 at the 2017 U18 World Championship .

After two years, Hughes retired due to old age from the NTDP and moved to the University of Michigan , for whose Wolverines he has since participated in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As a freshman , he scored 29 points in 37 games and was consequently elected to the Second All-Star Team and the All-Rookie Team of the Big Ten Conference . He also took the U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2018 and won the bronze medal there before leaving for the senior national team during the 2018 World Cup debut. He was the youngest player of the entire tournament and won the bronze medal with the team.

Hughes was considered one of the most promising talents in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2018 , so he was seen by all relevant rankings among the top ten selected players. Due to his physique (178 cm; 79 kg), which is clearly below average for a defensive player, he is primarily considered a talented offensive defender, so he is certified as having outstanding technical skills and an above-average game overview. In the actual draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected him in seventh position. For now, however, he returned to Michigan and took part in the U20 World Cup again at the turn of the year , where he won the silver medal with Team USA . He ended the 2018/19 season with a points average of over 1.0 per game (33 in 32 games) and as the top scorer for the Wolverines, before signing an entry-level contract with the Canucks in March 2019 and his debut in the National Hockey League a little later (NHL) gave.
