Brandon Sutter (born February 14, 1989 in Huntington , New York ) is a Canadian - American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League since July 2015 and plays for them on the position of the center .
Career
Sutter began his career in 2005 with the Red Deer Rebels in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . During the 2004/05 season he came there for his first seven regular season appearances and completed another seven games in the playoffs , where he was able to convince with one goal and four assists . In the following season he was finally part of the regular squad and was the best scorer of his team with 46 points, which, however, missed the playoffs. With the Canadian U18 national team , he took part in the U18 Junior World Championship in April 2006.
In the 2006/07 season Sutter was able to improve again and, together with his cousin Brett Sutter, was the third best scorer of the Rebels with 57 points. Because of his performance, the teams of the National Hockey League became aware of him and in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round in eleventh position.
In August, Sutter was appointed to the Canadian U20 selection, which faced the Russian national team in the 2007 Super Series .
He attended the Carolina Hurricanes' training camp in September but returned to the Red Deer Rebels for the 2007-08 season . The Rebels showed great weaknesses and Sutter was still one of the best players on the team, so he was appointed to the Canadian selection for the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 , where Canada won the title. In the WHL, however, Sutter missed the playoffs with the Rebels. With 49 scorer points, he was the team's top player.
Shortly thereafter, he signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes and completed a few games in the American Hockey League for their farm team , the Albany River Rats , before the summer break . In the fall, Sutter was able to earn a regular place in the Hurricanes' NHL squad at the training camp.
On June 22, 2012 Sutter was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins during the NHL Entry Draft 2012 by the Hurricanes together with the first-round draft law and Brian Dumoulin , who gave up Center Jordan Staal for it . After three years in Pittsburgh, it was handed over to the Vancouver Canucks in July 2015, including a success-based third-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft , who in return sent Nick Bonino , Adam Clendening and a six-round vote for the same draft to Pittsburgh.
