Brent Colin Sutter (born June 10, 1962 in Viking , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey striker and current coach. He currently serves as the trainer and owner of the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League .
Career
Brent Sutter began his career in 1977 in the second-rate Canadian Junior League Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Red Deer Rustlers . At the end of the 1979/80 season he moved to the first-class junior league Western Hockey League for the Lethbridge Broncos . In the 1980 NHL Entry Draft he was selected in the first round at position 17 by the New York Islanders , and in the 1980/81 season he also made three appearances in the National Hockey League in which he scored two goals and prepared two but sent back to the WHL. Also in the following season he first played for Lethbridge, but was then finally appointed to the NHL squad of the Islanders and won his first Stanley Cup at the end of the season .
1982/83 Sutter played a moderate regular season with 40 points in 80 games, but in the playoffs he was one of the best scorers with ten goals and eleven assists when the Islanders again won the Stanley Cup. The following year they moved into the finals again, but failed at the Edmonton Oilers . 1984/85 Sutter had by far his best season and scored a total of 102 points scorer. Sutter played a total of ten years with the Islanders and led the team from 1987 as team captain before he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in October 1991 and reached the Stanley Cup final in his first season.
He played three years with the Blackhawks under his brother Darryl Sutter as head coach, who left the team in 1995. Brent Sutter stayed until 1998 when he ended his career as a player.

In 1999 he bought the Red Deer Rebels from the Canadian Junior League WHL and took the post as coach and general manager of the team. In 2001 he won the WHL playoffs with the Rebels and finally the Memorial Cup , the most important trophy in Canadian ice hockey for 16 to 21 year olds. In the following two years he led the Rebels twice to the final of the WHL playoffs, but they lost both times. In 2005 and 2006 he was head coach of the Canadian U20 national team at the Junior World Championships and led them to the gold medal in both years.
On July 12, 2007, Brent Sutter resigned as head coach and general manager of the Red Deer Rebels. His brother Brian Sutter then took over the coaching post. A day later, the New Jersey Devils from the NHL presented him as a new coach. In August and September 2007, Sutter supervised the Canadian junior selection at the third edition of the Summit Series as head coach.
For the 2009/10 season he was employed by the Calgary Flames , where he worked until the end of the 2011/12 season .

Brent Sutter has six brothers, five of whom made it to the NHL. Darryl Sutter completed 406 games and scored 279 points, was General Manager of the Calgary Flames until the end of 2010 and coached several NHL teams. Brent Sutter played for the Islanders with his older brother Duane , who won the Stanley Cup four times. Duane was used 731 times in the NHL and scored 342 points. From 2000 to 2002 he trained the Florida Panthers and later worked as a functionary.
Brian Sutter played 779 games with 636 points for the St. Louis Blues , the player's shirt number 11 in his honor locked . He was the team captain for nine years. Since 1988 he has coached the Calgary Flames and the Boston Bruins, among others, and in 1991 was honored with the Jack Adams Award for the NHL's best coach.
Rich Sutter played 874 games in the NHL and scored 315 points. For a little over a year he played in Chicago under the direction of his brother Darryl and together with Brent. After his active career, he worked as a talent scout for the Minnesota Wild and the Phoenix Coyotes . His twin brother Ron Sutter was also trained by his brother Darryl in San Jose for a total of three years. Ron played 1,093 games in the NHL and was able to score 533 points. For a year he was team captain of the Philadelphia Flyers .
Several players from the second generation of the family also moved to the NHL. While Shaun Sutter , Brian's son, was selected by the Calgary Flames in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , but never ran into the NHL, Brett Sutter , Darryl's son, Brandon Sutter , Brent's son, and Brody Sutter , the son of Duane, the leap into the highest league in North America. Moreover played Luke Sutter , son of Rich, also briefly in the professional sector, while Riley Sutter is active (1999 *), the son of Ron at youth level.
