Anders Mark Lee (born July 3, 1990 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since April 2013 . The center , which excelled in high school through top performance in various sports, played a year in the United States Hockey League before becoming a professional and then attended the University of Notre Dame . Since the 2018/19 season he has led the Islanders as team captain .
Career
family
Anders Lee was born in St. Paul and grew up in Edina , a suburb of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area , and has two younger sisters. His father also played ice hockey, but in the position of goalkeeper . He started playing ice hockey at the age of three. In his youth, Lee showed top athletic performance not only in ice hockey, but also in American football , baseball and speed skating . He also achieved top marks in the school sector.
High school
From 2004 to 2007 Lee attended Middle School and High School at Saint Thomas Academy , a private military academy in Mendota Heights . However, he continued to play ice hockey in his hometown of Edina, about 50 kilometers away. It was only in eighth grade, when he started high school, that he was accepted into the Saint Thomas Academy team, where he played with Jordan Schroeder , among others , and won the Minnesota school championship with the team in 2006 . In the spring of 2007, Lee made the rather rare change from a private to a state school and returned to Edina to attend Edina High School for the last two years of school. The reason for this change was, among other things, the much shorter way to school and the fact that Lee was able to play with teammates he knew from childhood or from Edina's youth ice hockey programs.
In his first year as a junior at Edina High School , he established himself directly on the school's sports teams. As early as fall 2007 he played as a quarterback for the American football team and led it to the finals of the Minnesota school championship, where the Eden Prairie High School was defeated. In winter he switched back to ice hockey, scored 54 points scorer in 31 games and was elected to the All-State First Team by the Pioneer Press . In the spring he was part of the baseball team, where he played as a pitcher and third baseman .
The next season, his senior - and thus his final year of high school - Lee had his breakthrough as a football player, scoring 32 touchdowns and throwing five more. In late 2008, he was named Gatorade State Football Player of the Year and Star Tribune All-Metro Players of the Year .; he was also in the final for the election of "Minnesota Mr. Football". On the ice he completed a similarly successful season with 84 scorer points from 31 games and was in the final for the Minnesota Mr. Hockey title , which was subsequently received by the later professional and teammate Nick Leddy . By the end of his high school years, Lee was selected in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in 152nd place by the New York Islanders , where he was already approved for the 2008 draft. After the draft, he decided to attend the University of Notre Dame and play ice hockey there, although other universities were interested in signing up for the football team, such as Harvard and the University of Denver .
USHL
However , Lee did not want to start college until the 2010/11 season, before spending a year with the Green Bay Gamblers from the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest all-American junior league. The Gamblers selected him in the 2007 USHL Draft. The 2009/10 season, which he spent in Green Bay, was to be a very successful one with numerous awards. With the team he won both the regular season and the play-offs and thus the Anderson Cup and the Clark Cup ; he was also awarded the title of MVP for the entire play-offs. He was also with 35 goals top scorer in the entire USHL, was the First All-Star Team and the All-Rookie team selected and received the title of Rookie of the Year (dt .: Rookie of the Year).
college
In autumn 2011, he began his time at the University of Notre Dame , where he had enrolled for a major of management . At the same time he played for the "Notre Dame Fighting Irish", the university's ice hockey team. In his first year he led the team standings with 24 goals. The Fighting Irish were eliminated in the playoff semi-finals of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), but took part by invitation to the nationwide university championships of the United States. There they won the regional preliminary round games and now competed as one of the best four teams in the country for the Frozen Four in Lee's hometown of St. Paul. There Notre Dame was eliminated directly in the semifinals against the eventual winner, the University of Minnesota Duluth . Because of his performance in the home league CCHA, he was elected to the CCHA All-Rookie Team and the CCHA Second All-Star Team .
His sophomore year turned out to be much less successful in sporting terms, so the Fighting Irish ended the season in 8th place at the CCHA. In the following year, however, the CCHA playoffs and thus the Mason Cups were won ; In addition, the center was appointed to the CCHA First All-Star Team . A little later, in April 2013, Lee signed an entry contract with the New York Islanders, who had drafted him in 2009. He graduated from college in May 2014 with a bachelor's degree.
New York Islanders
Lee made his NHL debut shortly after signing the contract, scoring a goal straight away in this, a 5-2 over the Winnipeg Jets . In the subsequent play-offs for the Stanley Cup , in which the Islanders lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round , the center was not used. He spent most of the following 2013/14 season with the Islanders' farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League . There he played 54 games and led the team's top scorer list with 22 goals. In February 2013, the Islanders called him back to the NHL squad to play in the remaining 22 regular season games. In these Lee scored 14 scorer points; the Islanders, meanwhile, clearly missed the play-offs. In July 2014, the Islanders extended his contract for one year.
At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Lee completed five games in the AHL, was subsequently appointed to the NHL squad and was able to establish himself there in the fourth attack line. In February 2015, he scored as many scorer points in 15 games that he was named NHL Rookie of the Month . At the end of the season he was fourth-best rookie scorer in the league with 25 goals , whereupon he played for his home country for the first time at the 2015 World Cup and won the bronze medal there. After the 2014/15 season, he signed a new four-year contract with the Islanders.
Subsequently, Lee steadily increased his performance in New York, he reached the mark of 30 goals for the first time in 2016/17, before increasing to 40 goals in 2017/18. In both years he became the Islanders' best goalscorer. He was then named the 15th team captain in the team's history in October 2018 , succeeding John Tavares . In July 2019, Lee signed a new seven-year contract in New York that should earn him an average annual salary of $ seven million.
