Tom Kühnhackl (born January 21, 1992 in Landshut ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League since July 2018 . With the Pittsburgh Penguins he won the Stanley Cup in the 2016 and 2017 playoffs .

Kühnhackl has played several times for the German national team in international tournaments in the junior division and celebrated his debut in the senior national team in 2016. He is one of three children of the former German ice hockey player and member of the IIHF Hall of Fame , Erich Kühnhackl .

Career

After Kühnhackl was able to record 42 scorer points in 33 games in the DNL team of EV Landshut in the 2007/08 season , he was appointed to the professional team by then coach Mike Bullard in preparation for the 2008/09 season . After a good performance in the preparatory games, he made the jump to the professional team, where he also helped out in the DNL team during the season. Kühnhackl also played in the U17 national team.

On March 20, 2009 he received the Alois Schloder Cup as the best young player of the 2008/09 season as part of the play-off game against EV Ravensburg . During the CHL Import Draft , Kühnhackl was selected in 24th place by those responsible for the London Knights from the Ontario Hockey League . However, these gave the transfer rights of the German directly to the league competitor Windsor Spitfires . Kühnhackl also played for the German team at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2009 .

In mid-July 2009 Kühnhackl was given a sponsorship license , with which he was entitled to play for the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League in addition to his second division home club Landshut Cannibals . During the 2009/10 season, Kühnhackl mainly played for the Cannibals and was able to confirm the good performance from the previous season. With the Augsburg Panthers, he was also used for the first time in the top German league and recorded four missions. He also appeared again for the German national team at the U18 Junior B World Championship in 2010 . At the end of the season Kühnhackl moved to North America in the Canadian Junior League OHL to the Windsor Spitfires.

The talented right winger was ranked eighth in the Central Scouting Report in the category of international young players. On June 26, 2010, the left-hander was selected in the fourth round in 110th place in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins . According to the Canadian specialist magazine The Hockey News, Kühnhackl is one of the top five players of his year who were only drafted at the bottom, although they probably have enough talent for a successful NHL career. In this sense, Kühnhackl should be understood as a "draft bargain" because he was relatively talented for a player who was drawn so late. On March 22, 2011, he signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the play-offs of the 2010/11 OHL season , Kühnhackl reached the final of the Western Conference with the Spitfires, in which the team was eliminated against the eventual champions Owen Sound Attack . Tom Kühnhackl was the third best play-off scorer with 23 points , behind Owen Sounds Rob Mignardi and Joey Hishon .

The 2011/12 season began Kühnhackl again with the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL, which gave him on November 2, 2011 together with a second round suffrage in the CHL Import Draft 2013 in exchange for Phillip Di Giuseppe , Jaroslav Pavelka , Niagara's second round suffrage in the CHL Import Draft 2012, 2014 and 2015 as well as the first-round voting rights in the CHL Import Draft 2013 to the Niagara IceDogs . On November 4, 2011 , the German winger checked the opposing defender Ryan Murphy hard on his second OHL appearance for the IceDogs in a game against the Kitchener Rangers . Kühnhackl's opponent suffered a concussion as a result of the action . As a result, the striker received a five-minute and a game-time disciplinary penalty in the game, after the game Kühnhackl was excluded from the OHL for an indefinite period. On November 8, 2011, the league's decision was finally announced to impose a suspension of 20 games for the current season. A video was posted on the league website on the day of the suspension, showing the game situation and the factors for the suspension chosen.

In 2012 Kühnhackl switched to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League . In addition to the games in the AHL, the striker was also used there in the Wheeling Nailers farm team in the ECHL . On December 2, 2012, he suffered a shoulder injury, which also meant the end of the season. In January 2016 he moved up to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and was then able to establish himself in the NHL squad. In February 2016, he scored his first goal in the North American top division in the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning while being outnumbered, before his contract with the Penguins was extended for another two years the following month. At the end of the 2015/16 season, the attacker won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins and thus became only the third German - after Uwe Krupp and Dennis Seidenberg - to succeed. Kühnhackl was able to repeat winning the title with the team the following year.

After the 2017/18 season, however, Kühnhackl did not receive a new contract with the Penguins, so he signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders as a free agent in July 2018 . There he began the season in the Bridgeport Sound Tigers farm team , but he was soon appointed to the NHL squad. In June 2019, his expiring contract was extended by one year.

In addition to his father, Kühnhackl names the Canadian center forward Sidney Crosby , his former teammate with the Pittsburgh Penguins, as his great role model.

International

On August 27, 2016, Kühnhackl made his debut in the German national team in a friendly against France . A few days later, he scored the winning goal in the decisive match against hosts Latvia at the Olympic qualifying tournament and thus helped the DEB team to participate in the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
