Adam Pelech (born August 16, 1994 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since March 2014 .
Career
Adam Pelech was born in Toronto and played in his youth for the prestigious youth departments of the Toronto Marlboros in the regional junior leagues. In 2010 he was selected in 22nd position of the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) by the Erie Otters , for which he ran up at the beginning of the 2010/11 season. During his rookie season he made his international debut when he took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 with Team Canada Ontario at the turn of the year and won the gold medal there. Another gold medal followed at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 in August 2011. After his second OHL year, in which the defender got 20 scorer points in 44 games, he took part in the U18 World Cup in 2012 with the Canadian U18 team and won there with the team the bronze medal. He was also honored by the OHL with the Bobby Smith Trophy and the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award , which honor players with outstanding academic achievements. Pelech was then selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 65th position by the New York Islanders , having previously participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game . For the time being, however, the defender returned to Erie for two more years and came there in the 2013/14 season with 54 points from 60 games on his best personal statistics, so that he was voted into the Second All-Star Team of the league. He also represented his home country with the U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2014 , where he finished fourth with the team.
In March 2014, Pelech signed a three-year entry contract with the New York Islanders . As expected, he was used at the beginning of the 2014/15 season with the Islanders' farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he spent the entire season and the beginning of the 2015/16 season before he made his debut for the Islanders in the National Hockey League (NHL) in November 2015 . For much of the year, however, Pelech was out due to a thoracic outlet syndrome , diagnosed in January 2016 , which required an operation to remove the first rib and parts of the muscles . After more than two months, the defender returned to the Islanders' squad in April and played two more games, making a total of nine NHL appearances. With the start of the 2016/17 season, Pelech regularly plays with the Islanders.
