Career
Mayfield spent part of his youth in the youth program of the St. Louis Blues from his hometown, before he moved to the United States Hockey League shortly before his 17th birthday and played there for two years for the Youngstown Phantoms. At the end of his time in Youngstown, the defender was in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in the second round in 34th overall position of the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League . But first he enrolled at the University of Denver . In addition to his studies, he played parallel for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During the two years at the university, the defender collected 29 scorer points in a total of 81 games at college level .
In April 2013 Mayfield finally signed his first professional contract with the Islanders, ending his studies early. The defender spent the rest of the 2012/13 season with New York's Bridgeport Sound Tigers farm team in the American Hockey League . The following season, the American also ran for Bridgeport before making his debut for New York in the NHL towards the end of the season in April 2014. Also in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 season , Mayfield was an integral part of the Sound Tigers squad, but he kept coming back to sporadic missions for the Islanders. In the summer of 2016, management extended the defensive player's contract, which was running out, by two years. In the course of the 2016/17 season, he commuted more frequently between the NHL and AHL squads before finally establishing himself in the NHL squad of the Islanders the following year.
