Career
Mathew Barzal played in his youth for the Burnaby Winter Club , the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs and the Coquitlam Express of the British Columbia Hockey League before the Bantam Draft 2012 Western Hockey League (WHL) in the first overall position of the Seattle Thunderbirds was selected . As a rookie , the attacker scored 54 points in 59 games in his first WHL season and then represented his home country at the U18 World Cup in 2014 , where he won the bronze medal with the team. In August of the same year, the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2014 followed . In the following season 2014/15, his draft season, Barzal fell out for almost three months due to a patellar fracture with subsequent surgery and was nevertheless selected in 16th position by the New York Islanders in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . He also won another bronze medal at the U18 World Championship .
The Flyers equipped Barzal with an entry-level contract in September 2015 , but sent him back to the WHL for the time being to allow him more match practice. There the attacker completed his best season so far with 27 goals and 61 assists, at the end of which he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the Western Conference of the WHL.
As part of the preparation for the 2016/17 season, Barzal earned a place in the Islanders squad and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2016 . After another NHL mission, however, the Islanders sent him back to the Thunderbirds in the WHL to allow the Canadian more game practice. After finishing sixth at the U20 World Cup in 2016 , the attacker won the silver medal at the U20 World Cup in 2017 in his own country. With the Thunderbirds he won the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup at the end of the season and was also recognized as a WHL Playoff MVP and reelected to the First All-Star Team of the Western Conference.
At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Barzal established himself in the Islanders' squad and took the lead in the rookie scorer list around the middle of the season , so that he was named NHL Rookie of the Month for January. At the end of the season he was clearly leading all rookies in the league with 85 points, a mark that was last achieved among league beginners over ten years ago by Yevgeny Malkin (2006/07). Accordingly, he received the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL at the NHL Awards 2018 and was also voted into the NHL All-Rookie Team .
After his first professional season, Barzal also made his debut for the senior national team of Canada as part of the 2018 World Cup , where he finished fourth with the team.
