Pentti Alexander Lund (born December 6, 1925 in Karijoki , † April 16, 2013 in Thunder Bay , Ontario , Canada ) was a Finnish ice hockey player .

At the age of six he moved from Finland to Canada . He later played for the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League . He was the first ever Finn in this league.

Career

In the 1945/46 season, Pentti Lund began his professional career at the Boston Olympics in the EHL and was top scorer in this league with 33 points in 34 games. The following season he stayed at the Olympics, but also had a job with the Boston Bruins in the play-offs of the NHL. In the 1947/48 season Lund moved to the AHL to the Hershey Bears , where he also showed a good performance.

Then Pentti Lund moved to the New York Rangers and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie with 30 points in 59 games.

In the 1951/52 season Lund went back to the Boston Bruins, where he was seriously injured on November 13 in a foul by a stick too high by Clark Martin from the Chicago Blackhawks team in the right eye . From that moment on, his vision in that eye was severely impaired. He was out for three months, but then continued to play for the Bruins and ended the 1952/53 season with 17 points.

The following two seasons Lund completed with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the amateur league NOHA and retired in 1955.

On September 29, 1984, he was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame . In 1992 he was accepted into the Finnish ice hockey hall of fame.

Lund died on April 16, 2013 in a Thunder Bay hospital.
